In (october) 2014 I visited Maputo, capital of Mosambique, for the first time. The living conditions the people there have to endure were truly shocking to me. Mosambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. Half of the population lives below the poverty line and is able to spent less than half a Dollar per day. The average life expectancy is below 50 years of age.

Every second child is malnourished, two thirds of the people don't have any acess to medical care. Many die of AIDS or tuberculosis.

And on top of it, Mosambique suffers from a corrupt government and the consequences of a civil war.

During my stay I got to know Nelson, who works as a day labourer at Maputo market carrying heavy loads of food and other life goods. In the 1980s he was a contract worker in the former GDR- at the time Monsabiques "brother state". After the fall of the wall he was sent back to Maputo.

(würde ich einfügen) Till this day he waits for parts of his salary, he any many other so called "Madgermanes" feel is rightful theirs. The money was payed to Mosambique by the GDR - but until today most of the money never reached the people who earned it. For many reasons.

Nelson works really hard every day and yet his money only lasts for the very basic needs. If on some days, the markters don't have work for him - he has to starve. He lives in a little hut made of stone without running water and electricity. His only luxury is an old guitar he brought back from the GDR, on which he plays passionately.

Nelson is in his late 40s, and soon he will no longer be physically able to work the heavy loads at the market. He has tried to find another form of occupation for years - like many other Mosambicans.

Since I met him, I try to support Nelson as best as I can with little amounts of money that I send to him via Moneygram (link?). But, unfortunately, my financial means are not big enough to grant Nelson a sum permanently.

He dreams of breeding chicken oder hogs in a small stable to be able to secure his livelyhood for the future. I would make me very happy, if you could support Nelsons dream with a donation, if ever so small. He truly deserves it!

All the best from Hamburg

This is Nelsons living room. Apart from an old bed he does not own any furniture.
