Thank you for visiting the United for The Gilis - Earthquake Relief Fund campaign. During the month of October, The United for The Gilis Team would like to raise 5000 euros to help fund 12 earthquake-safe homes for 12 families left homeless during the recent Indonesian earthquakes. Please help us realize this goal for our friends on the Gilis.

The Gili Islands and Lombok, Indonesia, were recently hit by several earthquakes, which started on August 5, 2018, with 5.0-7.0 magnitudes and several aftershocks. These earthquakes left 350,000+ people homeless, 500+ dead, and over 150,000 injured. Across the three Gili Islands, only a short boat ride from each other, thousands of locals are currently sleeping in tent camps on the islands, without proper sanitation facilities or electricity. While trying to rebuild their homes and lives, daily, they are also trying to rebuild local businesses, as tourism is the main source of income on these islands. The road ahead is a long one, but Gili residents and people from around the world are working together every day to make a difference.

The United for Gili Team consists of a network of friends from around the world who love these islands, the people, culture, and nature that is to be found there. Some of our Team have traveled to The Gilis and some of us have worked and lived on these islands. We now hope to give back to a community of people and a natural environment that left such a lasting impression on our lives, even from all of these miles and continents away.

Members of the United for The Gilis Team trained and worked in scuba diving at Big Bubble Dive, on Gili Trawangan. The earthquakes not only ravaged the dive center, but it also left 12 of the Big Bubble staff and their families homeless. The dive shop and its team have been working since 2001 to protect, conserve, and educate divers on the islands' marine environment, while simultaneously providing a fun and safe holiday experience for thousands of tourists from all over the world. Although Big Bubble does not know when its doors will be able to reopen again, due to earthquake damage, the main objective at the moment is to rebuild the lives of the locals who worked there. Anna Walker, conservationist, dive instructor, and owner of Big Bubble Dive, is currently trying to fund and build 12 earthquake-safe homes for her 12 Big Bubble staff members and their families, whom are currently homeless.

And although it might not seem like we, outside of Indonesia, can do much about a disaster that happened countries and continents away, here we are now...and that is already something. Spreading the word, passing this message on to other people, that is something. Please, share this page with others, because everyone can help make a difference - no matter how big or small.

As mentioned above, during the month of October, The United for The Gilis Team would like to raise 5000 euros to help fund these 12 earthquake-safe family homes. We would like to ask for your help in letting these 12 families know that people from around the world care about what is going on, and we are not too busy to help in some way.

Thanks to everyone, near and far, for their time, donations, and kindness. Updates and photos of the rebuilding will also be provided on this site.

Updates from Indonesia

Update posted by Leah Wojnarowski at 06:49 pm

Thanks to everyone for their time, donations, and support. This would not be possible without you. Two of the 12 families have funding for new homes, and the building of outer walls and light roofing on the other ten houses has started in Gili Trawangan, thanks to UK fundraising efforts.. . . . .
