Hearing aids for little girl

Luna is one beautiful three year old girl. Because of extreme preterm birth (27 week, 950g.), Luna has a severe hearing loss - 99 % in both ears. Therefore, already as a baby, she had to cope with big challenges. But she is a big fighter and she grows without taking the smile off her face. Children with such severe hearing loss usually must get the cochlear implant so they could learn to speak. Although she wears just ordinary hearing aids, thanks to the hard work and exercising, Luna’s speech is developing surprisingly well and now she fully fits in a regular kindergarten group. Because of that she is not a candidate for implant.

Nevertheless, she still cannot hear well enough to be able to understand speech without lip-reading, to hear the sound of car horns on the street, to have conversation with the other children when there is murmur in the room, or to fully enjoy music as her healthy peers. In spite of that, she adores music, she is singing and dancing all day long, she is a big blabbermouth, and she is very gregarious.

People who see her for the first time usually hardly believe that she has hearing loss. She is full of life and she is smiling all the time. Even though her hearing aids actually give her very poor quality of sound, she loves them very much and uses them to the fullest. Who knows, maybe she becomes a great musician or some famous speaker some day.  Although she probably cannot even imagine that world of sounds is much richer than she can hear, she is surprisingly gifted for music. Often we (her parents) wonder how she sings some child songs so well when theoretically she cannot hear their melody properly. Be as it may, she taught us that miracles happen when she was born and survived.

Still, there is a way to help her to hear much better. Technology constantly advances and now there are cutting edge models of hearing aids for children with profound hearing loss, which can provide much better sound than Luna’s hearing aids. Unfortunately their price is much bigger then Luna’s social insurance covers. On the other hand, time has a crucial role in this case because deaf children need as much sound and speech stimulation as possible during the most intense period of brain development in the early years of life.
