It was worse than a house fire in so many ways. We didn't just lose almost everything we owned, we lost our health. Even though everyone technically made it out alive, we were scarred. And insurance? Yeah, it didn't cover something called mold. The seller and broker who did not disclose and sold us a house riddled with toxic mold, didn't lift a finger to make any of it right.
We asked a hundred questions. We paid for all of the tests and inspections. But we couldn't see what they hid, and we were poisoned. Our then three year old, six year old, eight year old were all damaged right along with us. The mold attacked our organs, muscles, nervous, and immune systems and left us compromised. We have been trying to recover for six years but the doctors have told us the most important part of our treatment is a medically safe home. A home that breathes so it dries out and doesn't mold when water is spilled or leaks from pipes. A home without a heavy toxic load since our bodies are already weak.
This has been a journey we never chose, but God chose it for us and has been with us every step of the way. We have met amazing people along this path, people with big hearts and wisdom to help us mend along the way. But we need a safe place so our babies can get better. They have suffered deeply because of this: losing all of their special things, their home in the country and yard they loved so much, their sense of wholeness and a pain free day, and at times - they feared they would lose their mom and dad too. They have so much life to live, and we want to help them recover as much as possible so they have a bright future. Ben already works a full time and part time job, but with medical expenses and needs and all the debt from remediating the contaminated home etc., we just do not have the resources we need for a down-payment. The doctors are concerned that if we remain where we are at for another two years the damage may be irreversible.
We live in Wisconsin. To build a modest 2,000 square foot home out of medically safe/non-toxic building materials with a detached garage, will be about $400,000.00 plus the cost of land. Depending on where it is located, lots run anywhere from $50,000 - $125,000. We also need to replace all of our household items which we lost due to contamination. Any extra above and beyond these expenses (and the unexpected surprises that come with building) would go towards medical treatment for our children.
Would you consider giving to make the dreams of complete strangers a reality? It is a big request, and we are humbled at the thought anyone would. Our hope and prayer is to one day be in a place of strength again, where we can reach out and help others in a similar situation to find their footing and a way forward into paths of healing.
