Well, around this time last year I was diagnosed with Cancer. I am pleased to say a year on I am hopefully on the right side of it now, although fingers always remain firmly crossed and faith unwaivering, with monitoring and subsequent therapy ongoing.

The pain, confusion, anger and upset as well as concern for the impact on my loved ones is indelible in my memory of that day and the days and months following.

The last year has been a testing and trying time, punctuated by surgery, hospital stays for treatment and such like. As a result of forced inactivity and surgery etc, I gained a tremendous amount of weight, having been at a very acceptable weight prior to this episode.

So my mission is to shift this weight and at the same time serve as a way of giving something back to others.continued below....

I have kept this fight a private fight up until now, only sharing with those that 'needed' to know, and of course my family (excluding my young children whom I believe do not need to be party to this information for some years to come and I would very much appreciate it remaining that way). But family, friends, colleagues and many of the doctors and nurses I encountered have done a wonderful job in helping and supporting me. One such nurse who worked under the Macmillan umbrella was a real help and support to me and my family as we went through the various stages.

Now, anyone that knows me will know two things about me, first is that I have been in the clinical environment for all of my working life and the second being that I ask questions (lots of them) and those questions require adequate and comprehensive answers including all the adjunct whys and wherefores. These two aspects combined meant a lot of work and tolerance for those treating me and guiding me through the processes. They did a great job and as such it seemed right and fitting that Macmillan benefit from their efforts then and my efforts now.

More recently I have been made aware that the excellent Head and Neck unit at my local NHS trust are short of cash for some very important pieces of equipment that quite simply help people breath when they have issues as a result of thier cancer. Also they are trying to fund a support group for head and neck patients. So I will be running two funding streams as some may prefer to donate direct to macmillan, but I would also like to collect for something more local and acute in terms of need. So I have a justgiving page and also this gogetfunding  page

I hope you will see that this is a worthy cause and give as generously as you can.

Sadly each and every one of us will be affected by this disease at some point whether personally, though a friend or relative.

Please believe me when I say it can be a dark and worrying place to find yourself, no matter your background, character or outlook, you need informed and objective support and guidance.

So that's me, that's why, no takeaways, plush restaurants or other indulgences ahead - just lots of cash please and certainly no sympathy :)
