Our Story | Η ιστορία μας

Handbrake is a collective effort of seven women to shed light on the very crucial issue of accessibility in the city of Athens, through the artistic creation of a short film.

This initiative has as a springboard the city of Athens itself and the obstacles it invites us to face every day, sometimes with success and sometimes with failure.

The film presents the parallel life of two women who, without knowing each other, cross Athens, each with their own way of transport and while carrying their own story.

For Melina, the main protagonist, the means of transport is her wheelchair and her story roughly begins from when she remembers herself "rolling" next to cars, in Vasilissis Sofias, during rush hour.

For Sylia, the means of transport is her beloved bicycle, with which she conquers the Athenian streets, defying any obstacles that might come her way.

Whether something finally unites them and how, we wish to explore together on the big screen but also in the discourse we aim to have in parallel with the preparation and screening of our film.

Το Handbrake είναι μια συλλογική προσπάθεια εφτά γυναικών να φέρουν στο φως το πάντα επίκαιρο ζήτημα της προσβασιμότητας της Αθήνας, μέσω της καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας μιας ταινίας μικρού μήκους.

Πρόκειται για μία πρωτοβουλία, η οποία έχει ως εφαλτήριο την ίδια την πόλη της Αθήνας και τα εμπόδια που μας καλεί καθημερινά να αντιμετωπίσουμε, άλλοτε με επιτυχία και άλλοτε με αποτυχία.

Η ταινία παρουσιάζει την παράλληλη ζωή δύο γυναικών που, χωρίς να γνωρίζουν η μία την άλλη, διασχίζουν την Αθήνα, η καθεμία με τα δικά της μέσα και κουβαλώντας τη δική της ιστορία.

Για τη Μελίνα, κεντρική πρωταγωνίστρια, το μέσο είναι το αμαξίδιό της και η ιστορία της ξεκινά από τότε που θυμάται τον εαυτό της να "ρολάρει" πλάι στα αυτοκίνητα, στη Βασιλίσσης Σοφίας, σε ώρα αιχμής.

Για τη Σήλια το μέσο είναι το αγαπημένο της ποδήλατο, με το οποίο οργώνει τους Αθηναϊκούς δρόμους, αψηφώντας οποιοδήποτε εμπόδιο μπορεί να βρεθεί μπροστά της.

Το αν τελικά τις ενώνει κάτι και πώς, θέλουμε να το εξερευνήσουμε μαζί στη μεγάλη οθόνη και στο διάλογο που στοχεύουμε να ανοίξουμε παράλληλα με την προετοιμασία και την προβολή της ταινίας.

Director's Statement

Our lives intersect daily with many people. Through these intersections we shape ourselves and co-shape with others.

What we hope to accomplish through this film is to shed light on often invisible paths to most of us.

Through unspoken dialogues and penetrating glances we want to co-shape a better, more accessible Athens. To "brake" and listen to the city and the people who make it up.

Οι ζωές μας διασταυρώνονται καθημερινά με πολλούς ανθρώπους. Μέσα από τις συναντήσεις αυτές διαμορφώνουμε και διαμορφωνόμαστε. Συν-διαμορφώνουμε και συν-διαμορφώνομαστε.

Αυτό που ελπίζουμε να καταφέρουμε μέσα από αυτήν την ταινία είναι να ρίξουμε φως σε συχνά αόρατες διαδρομές στους περισσότερους και περισσότερες από εμάς.

Μέσα από ανείπωτους διαλόγους και διαπεραστικές ματιές θέλουμε να συν-διαμορφώσουμε μια καλύτερη, πιο προσβάσιμη Αθήνα. Να "πάψουμε" και να αφουγκραστούμε την πόλη και τους ανθρώπους που την απαρτίζουν.

Female Representation in Greek Cinema | Γυναικεία Εκπροσώπηση στον Ελληνικό Κινηματογράφο

This short film will be narrating the story of a universal problem in Greece, a problem that affects all of us despite our gender, race, socioeconomic background. Having limited access due to infrastructure and consequently having one's independence and autonomy being robbed of them, is something we felt needed to be addressed in the Greek modern society. Moreover, we wanted to show that women can hold pivotal positions in a film production and make a vision come true just as well-rounded as anybody else would do. We know that women in the Greek cinema industry have experienced sexism and devaluation and as a female on-set crew by a majority, we wish to change this.

Αυτή η μικρού μήκους ταινία θα αφηγηθεί την ιστορία ενός καθολικού προβλήματος στην Ελλάδα, ενός προβλήματος που μας επηρεάζει όλους, όλες και όλα παρά το φύλο, τη φυλή, το κοινωνικοοικονομικό υπόβαθρο. Το να έχει κάποιο άτομο περιορισμένη πρόσβαση λόγω υποδομών και κατά συνέπεια να του αφαιρείται η ανεξαρτησία και η αυτονομία του, είναι κάτι που αισθανθήκαμε απαραίτητο να απευθυνθεί στην ελληνική σύγχρονη κοινωνία. Επιπλέον, θέλαμε να δείξουμε ότι οι γυναίκες μπορούν να κατέχουν κομβικές θέσεις σε μια κινηματογραφική παραγωγή και να κάνουν ένα όραμα πραγματικότητα εξίσου ολοκληρωμένα, όπως θα έκανε οποιοσδήποτε άλλος. Γνωρίζουμε ότι οι γυναίκες στην ελληνική κινηματογραφική βιομηχανία έχουν βιώσει σεξισμό και υποτίμηση και ως πλειοψηφικά γυναικείο συνεργείο στα γυρίσματα, θέλουμε να το αλλάξουμε αυτό.

The Leading Actresses | Οι κεντρικές πρωταγωνίστριες

When Melina wakes up in the morning, she feels ready to wander the streets of Athens (even when running a bit late). She has conquered the city. Nothing can stop her, even if it means that she has to "roll" next to the cars, in Vasilissis Sofias, at rush hour.

Sylia never forgets to water her plants. It's the first thing she does when she wakes up in the morning. When Athens is on strike (and not only then), she grabs her bike and plays it cool, making dangerous manoeuvres and defying any obstacles that might come her way.
