Dear Friends.

Students attending disadvantaged schools in predominately rural areas in South Africa do considerably worse in mathematics and especially in physical science. This negatively affects their chances of being accepted to universities and colleges.

Moreover, around 80% of disadvantaged students’ parents are unemployed and struggle to afford the application fee to apply to these universities. The effects of Covid-19 have also ensured that the students are even further disadvantaged as far their studies and applications are concerned.

Another real problem is that a large proportion of the students do not have access to the internet and struggle to complete a successful application to a university or college.

In response, this project has a two-pronged approach: merging physical science improvement classes with assistance with online university applications. The project aims to advance the level of physical science comprehension to ensure the grade 11 and 12 students have a better chance of achieving good marks. This is done with class tutoring, test questions, and demonstrations. Furthermore, with the aid of career tests and interviews, students are helped to apply for the correct choice of tertiary courses and to apply for funding

These two approaches will help to ensure that all the students have a much better chance of success. The facilitator visits one school a day and will complete career tests, data collection, university applications, and most importantly:-physical science tutorial classes.

The facilitator visits one school a day and will complete career tests, data collection, university applications, and physical science tutorial classes. In this way, 5 disadvantaged schools are serviced in a week, and about 200 learners benefit from the outreach program.
