After Hurricane Issac flattened the once tall plantain fields that surrounded our compound and destroyed the harvest, local farmers were forced to rely on each other and the community to send their children to school, buy food and get medical supplies.
The Haitian Youth Sponsorpship Program allows select students to stay in school despite the devastation around them. Only students under the age of 18 with demonstrated commitment to pursuing their education are eligible. There are only 4 students who still need a sponsor for this academic year.
It only costs $312 for Haitian youth to attend school for a year, including the cost of textbooks and a uniform. Funds are distributed directly by local organizers to the student's family, and students must provide regular grade reports and maintain good academic standing.
