Something as Simple as Ice Cream

My name is Amy Johnson and I am currently going to be a Junior at UMD Duluth college. I am a summer nanny for a family (of 5 children!) in St. Cloud, MN. Two of the children are adopted from Haiti. Vaniesa (12) was 9 years old when she was adopted. One time she told me that when she was adopted she got to experience the luxury of eating ice cream for the first time. She told me that if she ever got the chance to go back to Haiti, to the orphanage that she came from, that she would want to give all of the children ice cream for their first time. This story is where my journey begins. I wanted to learn more about the country and culture there and what better way then to go see it? When I started to get involved I found out that unfortunately the orphanage that Vaniesa and Sebee came from, isn’t really an orphanage anymore. Luckily my sister-in-law was working with someone whose family is involved in another orphanage!

What My (Our) Plan Is

I am planning a trip to Haiti in the June 2014 with a group of 8-10 UMD Duluth students to go over to Haiti and work in an orphanage called Children of the Promise. We want to raise money to pay for the volunteer students from UMD for their airfare, housing while there, getting supplies, getting supplies over to Haiti, transportation while we are there, food, and any extra will be donated directly to the orphanage. We are solely volunteers. When we are there our plan is to do chores around the orphanage and help watch over the children and anything they need our help with.
