I am currently a junior in high school, living in Amman, Jordan. I first thought about applying for summer programs such as Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) and Summer College at Cornell when one of my friends was lucky enough to be accepted in YYGS last year. It soon became a dream to attend such programs, because I have been living a very sheltered, protected life in Jordan my whole life, and was never able to experience living abroad, which I plan on doing in college. Although I have been privileged enough to attend an amazing boarding school only 45 minutes away from home, I still felt that there was something out there meant to be experienced that I still haven't experienced. However, coming from a family whose income mainly goes to my boarding school tuition, I soon realized that this may not be possible for me to do. My family has found itself running on a tight budget towards the end of 2017, as the houses we rented out became vacant. Although my parents are doing whatever it takes to help me achieve what I dream of and reach my fullest potential, they were brought to a sudden realization; for the first time, they found themselves unable to help me experience the world through education, since there are no exceptions in regards to paying application fees for such programs.
I do believe, however, that I am eligible to get accepted in such programs, and do not want my financial background to prevent me from doing so. If I do manage to get accepted, and manage to get the amount of financial aid necessary to enable me to set out on this journey, I believe that my life could change as a whole. I will finally be able to experience living in another continent altogether, and have a one-of-a-kind experience in colleges that I would like to apply to in the future. Although asking for help in such a manner was never really on the plan, and was a hard decision to make, I really do hope that I can get the help I need in order to reach my goal.
Thank you for your time!
