Gwatuna Agricultural Project

Gwatuna Agricultural Project is a startup idea by myself and a few community members from my village to integrate modern farming technics into a farming project for the community to ensure food security throughout the year, and through periods (years) of drought.


The first phase include fencing off the area allocated to us for the project, drilling a borehole and installing the water systems. We intend to begin farming with maize, pearl millet, cabbage, ground nuts, tomatoes, green peppers, and potatoes in the first year. In the second year, then intend to purchase small livestock with the profits and extend the farming to include pigs, goats, sheep & poultry (chickens, ducks and quills, & egg production). In the third year, we intend to include cattle and to grow feed.

The second phase entails processing and value addition such as milling, packaging and creating logistics with local sellers and markets as well as to nearer regions in the north of Namibia and south of Angola. This phase will begin in the second year of the project as it will be necessary when we improve the yields. In the third year, we intent to also extend value addition by processing the meat from the small livestock. As well as to to begin planting fruit-bearing trees such as Mangoes, Oranges, Guava & Lemon.


The third phase includes developing internship programs for fresh graduates and undergraduate students to do research projects and gain hands-on work experience in the agricultural industry (and later logistics& transportation, and other related fields). This will be in preparation to develop a curriculum eventually set up a vocational training center for agriculture, agronomics and closely related fields. The third phase will be implemented in steps, beginning in the second year as young agricultural pioneers will be needed to advice and supervise the farming procedures.
This may seem as a far-fetched dream, but the first hurdle - which was to secure the land and support from the traditional and local authority leaders has been overcome. The a very concise and elaborate business plan has been drafted, which includes minute details and alternatives as well as a clear plan for implementation at every step especially in the begin phases. A comprehensive study for the soil composition and availability of underground water is currently underway, and we have begun to approach local markets for interest in the produce we intend to produce in the future.
