My name is Fernando Tapia and I am currently undergoing a degree in Aeronautical Mechanical Engineering, I love the mechanical design and 3D modelling. One day I was thinking about how could I help people with my design skills, even though I am focusing my studies on industrial applications.
I consider myself an enthusiast in many subjects like wooden craftsmanship, concept design and indoor farming. As once a teacher told me: "food is the main need for a community to grow and be sustainable". At high school, I took a subject on ecology that taught us the basis of crop management and self-sustainable systems and it seemed it was easy to grow your food. The trick was on the space and equipment necessary to develop a functional growing system; the knowledge is at the reach of everyone who is determined not to be left behind.
Since my skills at 3D modelling and structural analysis allow me to create anything from my imagination, to develop a self-sustainable crop growing structure is not but a great and useful milestone that will not only help me get more experience at project management but will also become an incredible tool for those communities and people who find it hard nowadays to fit a functional crop system on a limited space. Using additive manufacturing to create functional tools and structures could bring this project to the reach of everyone.
Scientists have been telling us that the food will become scarce and hard to grow. What if we start looking at that issue and address it the best way we can? We are still on time to act. The system I am talking about may not be the solution to all of our food problems, but it could mean an important step towards it.
I know I am not a specialist on the matter, that I still need a lot of experience, but I believe firmly that this project will help a lot of people to reduce expenses on food and it will help them to learn that becoming sustainable is not as hard as they think; they will use small "worthless" spaces in their homes to grow spices, small crops and herbs that will become an advantage at the end.
Let me help others by doing the best I know, to create a functional space-saving system that will allow families and bigger communities to grow their food and ingredients so they can save a little (or a lot) of resources. If I could bring valuable farming information and an easy-to-use system with tools and structures to those who want to grow not only their food but themselves, I will gladly work hours while I continue studying because this means I'll be helping while I do the things I love.
This project includes the planning and developing of the farming system using 3D modelling and additive manufacturing. The project may extend and gain more features as the fundraising grows. I will start developing a personal and a 4-people family farming system; if the project grows, I will develop a more complex system that will adequate to the needs of specific communities. The goal is to sale these systems online so they could be at the reach of everyone; another fundraising will be used to bring these to anyone in need.
