Greenfield Action Committee

Update posted by James Hohman On Aug 18, 2017

If you are not on the "Nextdoor.com" website for Green Township, you may not be aware that Ambrosia communicated its decision to withdraw its application for a variance. But the letter also indicated that they were not withdrawing any right to reapply and, in effect, pick up where they left off. Our lawyer, Jim Fox, indicated that there are efforts in Trenton to look at changes to land use law in the state that might make it easier for companies like Ambrosia to site treatment centers in the state.

So, while we obviously quite pleased, we are not ready to consider this "case closed" quite yet. We will keep you posted as we take some time to figure out what we do next. Paying attention to Trenton seems to be the next task at hand.

We know it is not news that that tomorrow's land use committee meeting is at 7 pm at Green Hill's School. Nonetheless, here are some thoughts on tomorrow:

  • We are going to wear green to reflect our desire to keep Green "green"
  • Members of the Greenfield Action Committee will be handing out stickers with the same logo as the lawn signs you are now seeing around town
  • You can sign the petition if you have not already done so

We are encouraging everyone to actively listen and participate in the goings-on.

For the first meeting, being disruptive and antagonistic will not help our cause. We can strongly AND respectfully communicate our total opposition to this application for variance

We should not assume that the land use committee has pre-determined an outcome one way or the other. If the land use committee is inclined to vote our way, they will need a solid basis of negatives to reject the application and our job is to facilitate the creation of that list and ensure each negative is represented to its maximum potential. Your applause/approvals of any such negatives as they are expressed will be appropriate and welcome.

We do not expect there will be any final decision made on Thursday; rather, we think the meetings will stretch out over the summer, most likely into the fall.

It is possible that opportunities for public comment at this meeting will be limited, though eventually broader comment by the community will be permitted in subsequent meetings.

Something to avoid: we must strive to give Ambrosia NO EVIDENCE of a community bias specifically against drug addicts. They would love to paint us as ignorant, selfish NIMBY types and can attempt to use any evidence of community bias specifically against drug addicts in legal appeals should our committee deny their application since addiciton is considered a disability covered by the Americans with Disabilities act.

Because of YOUR generosity, we are pleased to share that we have engaged the services of a lawyer whose expertise is land use as well as a planner whose experience includes opposition efforts such as ours!

This is all because of YOU, the people of Green Township!

Thanks all who have contributed so far and to anyone helping spread the word! We are canvassing Green Township this weekend with fliers. If anyone has ideas on ways to connect with residents, area bicyclists and others who would support our cause, please post a comment on this site or send an email to [email protected]!

We have also been busy interviewing lawyers who we think can best represent our cause and are near a choice. We have also been establishing a candidate pool for a certified planner whose expert testimony can give our land use board a different interpretation on the impact than what would be put forward by the applicant. This is our best route to victory and it is these funds that will make that victory possible!

Ron, we have! We will have a lawyer and a planner at the meeting on June 8. Not going to add any more information here.

Not much time left to choose an attorney or any other representatives. Only 8 days to decide and plan a defense unless a postponement is granted.
