The Dead Vulture Project

Hello, this is Melanie and Spyros! We are a young couple at the age of 40 , with our 2 daughters, the older at the age of four (4) and the younger just a few days old!

We live on the beautiful Greek island of Evia, in Rovies village where we also run a small garden shop. Our place had been lately on the news because of the devastating forest fires, that lasted nine days, leaving nothing but ashes were once a majestic forest, olive trees and farming land was.

Evia's economy depends mostly on forestry, farming and a little bit of tourism in the summer months. As a result, all the main sources of income have been destroyed by the fire.

We always loved and admired nature and its beauty and since our studies are agriculture and landscape/interior design, we were planning on building our own small eco farm, on a piece of land just outside the village of Rovies. This property had 250 productive olive trees, surrounded by an old forest. Our idea with this project was to be self-sustained by the land and its olive trees, build our small family house using ecological and traditional methods (cob natural building) and establish the first small scale ecological glamping (furnished camping) place in Evia, introducing to visitors the local nature and herbs, olive harvesting and providing a suitable hosting place for a variety of seminars on the same themes of interest mentioned above.

Unfortunately, the property we were planning on building wasn’t spared by the fire, burning all the olive trees and the surrounding forest. The unexpected extra costs due to this, have added a crucial burden on our budget, but now we are determined even more to continue with our project and not to give in to this dire situation because we strongly believe that it will play its part in restoring our area, and breathe new life to our local economy.

In times like these we can use all the help we can get, and your support would give us the opportunity to pursue the burned piece of land, and bring it back to life by planting new productive trees in it and reforesting the surrounding area again.
