-Ciao- and -Thank You- for your interest in my volunteer adventures! This program will be a first for me. It is through the Global Volunteer Network which provides opportunities to make a difference in communities around the world! I have been accepted to teach English in Vietnam for 4 weeks starting January 15, 2014. This program calls for English speakers to teach in schools, orphanages, training centers, and disability centers. I am VERY excited about teaching in Vietnam.
"I cannot believe the purpose of life is to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is, above all, to matter, to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all."
Volunteers work alongside teachers and mainly help with pronunciation. Volunteers also assist in honing the vocational skills of the locals such as marketing, hospitality, sales, and house-keeping. Vietnam has called out for help against the growing illiteracy and poverty rate. I know with my experience tackling so many languages I will be able to help the community learn English and assist in teaching the skills they need to be successful. All of the languages I have studied are European so I am ecstatic that I have an opportunity to go to Vietnam to learn a completely new language and culture.
I am depending on the donations from friends, family, and other kind hearted individuals to fund my trip. The full payment amounts to $2347 and the flights are not included. I believe I will need the full amount 10 weeks before my program starts (by the end of September). By donating to my trip you play a HUGE part in the education of others around the world and EDUCATION IS THE BEST INVESTMENT. I believe that investing in education and languages can result in coexistance and -dare I say it- World Peace. Together we will build bridges over latitudes and longitudes.
"You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful."
Please know that I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is very difficult for me to ask for help but I would not be able to go without your generosity. If you are able to leave me your name and email I will love to personally thank you. Please spread the word about my program and help me raise awareness. Volunteers are needed all over the world. I am fully prepared to pour my heart into this program and all others.
"Then the time came when the risk it took to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."
*Many people have asked me why of all the places I could go why I chose Vietnam. Well to be honest my father is a Vietnam vet and he has never ever spoken of his experiences in the war. I have always been curious about it. Also the Global Volunteer program only has two locations set up in Vietnam and both locations are under manned. The most difficult part is finding volunteers for the disability centers. I know most countries nowadays rely heavily on tourism and they want help to be able to accommodate tourists. I just feel drawn to Vietnam more so than anywhere else in the world at the moment. I guess it's mostly curiosity. But I feel more passionately about going because of all the negative responses and doubt I have received from family members and coworkers. I know I have stacked alot of quotes up here already but another quote that I believe needs saying is "you can't fix the problems of tomorrow with the mind of yesterday." YES I understand that Vietnam caused many scars and ill feelings (and I am not saying there shouldn't be) but since the War a new generation has been born to Vietnam and I think this is an opportunity to work together and build a better relationship and most of all HEAL. I want to help and I know that I can.
