“Goosey” Onstage

This campaign aims to fund the theatrical production of Goosey - my first original stage play. Goosey is the winner of StrasbergWORKS 2018 - a program set up by The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute to encourage students to create/produce their original work.

This play tells the story of Lucy and her father, Gordon. Lucy has trouble remembering her mom, Judy, who died of cancer when Lucy was six years old. After Judy’s death, Lucy and her dad were never able to build a relationship. Growing up, Lucy had to deal with Gordon’s fame as a comedian and, especially, his most prominent creation: Days in the Hospital – a TV show inspired by Judy’s death. Writing this story made me think about how some of us wish to rescue our memories, while others wish to forget them. It also made me realize that, when people lose their respect for others and themselves for the sake of entertainment, the use of humor in art can be considered unethical. Most importantly, Goosey made me wonder about who we are with and without our parents, how much their presence or absence affect us, and the ways we have to “overcome” them in order to fully constitute ourselves. Those questions concern everyone and that’s why I believe in this play.

When a story is well-told, random people connect with laughter, tears, awe, and silence. I find these ‘connection moments’ extremely rewarding, and I want to be a storyteller to make them happen. Goosey is my first attempt to do so. Most people who are working in this production are volunteers, simply because they believe in the project in the same way that I do. Goosey is our passion project, and we only need a little help to bring it to life :).

Esta campanha tem como intuito financiar a produção de Goosey - minha primeira peça teatral. Goosey foi selecionada como a vencedora do festival StrasbergWORKS 2018 - um programa criado pelo Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute visando incentivar estudantes a criar e produzir seus próprios projetos teatrais.

Essa peça conta a história de Lucy e seu pai, Gordon. Lucy não se lembra muito bem de sua mãe, Judy, quem morreu de câncer quando Lucy tinha 6 anos de idade. Lucy e seu pai nunca foram capazes de se relacionar muito bem. Lucy cresceu tendo que lidar com a fama de seu pai como comediante e, especialmente, seu mais renomado projeto: Days in the Hospital - um show de TV inspirado na morte de Judy. Escrever essa história me fez pensar sobre como alguns de nós desejam recuperar certas memórias, enquanto outros desejam esquecê-las. Também me fez perceber que, quando o respeito por outros e por nós mesmos é perdido no meio de entretenimento, o uso de humor na arte pode ser considerado antiético. Mais importante, Goosey me fez pensar sobre quem nós somos com e sem nossos pais, o quanto suas presenças e ausências nos afetam e como precisamos "superá-los," de certa forma, a fim de constituir nossas individualidades inteiramente. Estas questões dizem respeito a todos nós, e, por isso, eu acredito nesta peça.

Quando uma história é bem contada, estranhos conectam-se com riso, choro, suspiros e silêncio. Eu acho esses "momentos de conexão" muito recompensadores e quero contar histórias para que eles aconteçam -Goosey é a minha primeira tentativa. A maioria das pessoas trabalhando nessa produção são voluntários que acreditam no projeto da mesma forma que eu. Goosey é a nossa semente, e só precisamos de um pouco de ajuda para brotá-la :).
