Dogs have grown to be man's best friend, filling our hearts and homes with immeasurable love & loyalty. Sadly, though, the feeling isn't always mutual.
For the homeless dogs of our city – Baku, Azerbaijan, life on the streets is shockingly brutal. The majority of citizens do not bother spaying or neutering their pets and as a result, HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS of homeless furballs are being forced to suffer through intolerable existence. Massacres have become the norm as dogs are routinely shot, violently beaten, or poisoned.
Azerbaijan is, indeed, not a good place for stray animals, but one man – Farid Mansurov, is fighting with all his might to give hope to as many desperate souls as he possibly can.
Moved by his love for animals and deep compassion towards strays around him, Farid began feeding and protecting homeless dogs and cats at a very young age. In 2010, he went the extra mile by sheltering a few traumatized stray dogs at his family’s abandoned farmhouse in Mardakan (a suburban settlement in Khazar raion of Baku).
The farmhouse became known as the Good World Shelter (GWS)
At the present time, GWS is the only animal shelter in Baku that provides care and urgent medical assistance to abused dogs, as well as those with disabilities and physical injuries.
We (members of HAPS - Homeless Animals Protection Society) have pleaded with the government to provide us with necessary funding for our non-profit shelter, but to no avail. Alarmingly, the number of chronically ill and severely injured dogs at our farmhouse continues to grow, causing a strain on the limited available resources to cater for them.
Presently, the shelter is home to about 200 dogs which were rescued, not just from the city of Baku, but from neighbouring communities as well.
In addition to his private funds, Farid has had no choice but to seek financial assistance from friends and family and ask for public donations to keep the shelter running. However, with the generous monthly sums we are currently able to raise from the public, we are only able to partially cover the ever-increasing high costs of medical care, proper nutrition, transportation, veterinary services (including spaying/neutering, surgeries and follow-up appointments), cleaning and grooming supplies, and other needs for our furry friends.
Furthermore, we desperately need to accumulate enough funds to finally be able to improve the current problematic conditions of the old farmhouse, by transforming it into a spacious, fully equipped and staffed 24-hour pet medical shelter.
At the present time, there are no 24-hour veterinary emergency centers available in Azerbaijan.
This why we are reaching out and appealing for YOUR support!
How YOU Can Help
As GWS is a non-profit organization, the well-being of our animals relies entirely on financial assistance from the public.
Please consider making a monthly or a one-time donation to our shelter! Your kind gift, no matter how large or small, will make all the difference in the lives of our furry friends!
TOGETHER we can build a brand new vet centre and give the gift of a safe and healthy reprieve from the vicious life on the streets to as many suffering pets as possible.
Please help us get the word out by sharing our campaign link on your social media pages!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support! THANK YOU for making a difference!
**Please note, that in Azerbaijan, PayPal users can only make purchases or send money via the system, but not sell anything or receive payments. As such, all funds collected through GoGetFunding will be deposited to a PayPal account of one of our GWS ambassadors/member of HAPS - Bella M, who is currently residing in London, UK. Every dollar collected (minus the GoGetFunding payment processing fees*) will be used towards our project in Azerbaijan and we take our obligation for financial transparency and accountability very seriously. Please follow this campaign, as well as our social media pages to stay in touch.

"Can I just give a little explanation to our English speaking friends. I live in London for many years, and shelter, as we imagine in our minds, and what we are used to seeing here, is a very different thing in Azerbaijan. There are no government funding at all, Farid created that shelter out of his own house. All feedings, veterinarian bills for checkups and operations and many more, all of it paid by donations of people like you and I. All the shelters bills, such as electricity, water etc, are paid by Farid and his family. Some might not be aware, Farid takes mainly sick and disabled animals, so for each treatment they have to wait until donations come in. Unfortunately shelter doesn’t have regular donations and for each new treatment, there is new post created. Shelter is always in debt to the veterinarian clinic, as sometimes there’s an emergency case, and dog has to be operated immediately and if there’s no time to wait for donations, vet clinic does it in credit. Also, if someone from abroad wants to adopt a dog, they have to help with the cost of making documents and tickets for desired animal, because as I already mentioned, shelter has no regular funds and it’s up to all of us to help as much as we can." - B.A (Member of HAPS)
