After World War II, most of people in South and North-East of Italy lived in extreme poverty. A lot of young Italians had no choice but to leave their own country in order to find a job abroad and send money back to their poor families in Italy.
My grandfather Carlo is one of the hundreds of thousand Italians that were forced to leave Italy, dreaming of a fresh start in a new homeland: Australia.
He was assigned the job of worker in the electric power infrastructure field.
After a few years, during his launch break, he met my grandmother Doonie, who was working as a waitress in a fast food. Soon, they fell in love, got married and had four children: John, Bernadette, Gordon and Ann. The family has been living there for almost 20 years, then decided to move to Italy.
My mother, Bernadette, was 13 at that time, she went to school and learnt Italian as John, Gordon and Ann did. They all grew up doing their best to adapt to Italian life and culture. My mum never reached this goal totally: she is an Italian citizen with Australian heart and so I am.
I was born in 1985 in the north-east of Italy, when my mum was 20 years old. I’ve been deeply loving Italian culture and language - I studied with infinite passion Italian Literature at Venice University - but living in Italy is becoming more difficult year over year due to the lack of job offers, low salaries and corrupted politics. It’s a sad life and, even though I am Italian, I have a strong sentiment: I don’t want my children to grow up in this country.
I live in the north-west of Italy today with my boyfriend Roberto and our only and biggest dream is to leave Italy, “go back” to Australia and never come back, in order to raise our children in a place where living is different than surviving.
We both started to work last year, but our salary just allows us to pay the rent, some unexpected medical expenses and the primary subsistence. Since our families are not well-off and do not have the money to help us, we need your support to collect some money for the visas, the assessment of our Italian titles in the Australian country, travel and accommodation.
If you would like to financially support our dream you can do it here. Any contribution will be as much important as appreciated.
