80% of UK news outlets are owned by 5 billionaires with vested interests. The gloucestershire radical is an independent and pluralist information & organising hub. It aims to contribute to building a culture of politics across the county (both party and non party politics and not party specific) discussing theory, linking campaigns and good ideas and unearthing our shared radical political history.
It has been live just over a week, and is already getting several hundred hits a day. People have been enthusiastic about the project and there is new material daily from a range of local writers and campaigners. I believe it is the right idea at the right time, post-brexit, more people politicized than ever it seems and other counties could also have a 'radical' A Somerset radical, Devon Radical and so on. I could help facilitate this and It could also expand into a county wide print edition.
Networking and web building, finding material, promoting the site across different social networks, updating the website, creating unique graphics for each article, writing myself for the site and researching an array of topics, collecting emails and creating newsletters, has made this more than a full time job. It is the job i'd like to do and I believe it serves an important purpose in the communities of Gloucestershire and there is no equivalent. I have been subsidizing this kind of work for a decade with unrelated paid labour and for different projects and have learned a lot in the process.
I'd like now to be able to afford to live from the work that I want to do, experienced in and passionate about. I live on a solar powered canal boat and my living expenses are relatively cheap. I'd also like to expand the project but without funds it is limited.
Independent local media vs 5 billionaires protecting and expanding their own financial assets. I just want to afford to live simply and not have to give this project up for something i'd like to do much less.
Please consider donating or making a small ongoing monthly contribution. I am aiming for £2000 per year. That breaks down to about 83 people supporting the project with £2 per month. I have set the funder up so one off payments or monthly subscriptions are possible.
That is my pitch!
