Funds raised in this campaign will solely help to provide materials and tools for Globe Gardens, a community gardening project created and led by Old Globe Theatre employees on a volunteer basis. Funds will not support the Old Globe Theatre as an institution, its productions or programs, or be paid to any one individual.
Currently under construction, the garden will be built using the open source plans of “The Growroom” as designed by SPACE10 and architects Mads-Ulrik Husum and Sine Lindholm. It is, essentially, a hollow sphere with six levels of planter boxes; inside, there are built-in benches so that visitors can relax and enjoy the plants. We will use primarily vegetables, herbs and flowers mentioned in William Shakespeare’s plays and poems, as well as other common plants grown during that time period. Educational signage will identify the plants and highlight passages from Shakespeare’s works. The Gardens will provide a place for employees, cast and guest artists of the theaters to take breaks, interact with coworkers in a non-stressful environment, and connect with the outdoors. The garden will be tended to by volunteer staff comprised of employees, but will welcome anyone that wants to get their hands dirty for an hour or so, or simply take time to breathe.
