Global Village Keepers has worked in Trivandrum from its coastal areas all the way to the Northern parts of this region for the past 4-5 years. We have a team of volunteers that work directly with the Catholic priests and ministry that are primarily in the fishermen villages. Though this storm is a new tragedy in the Trivandrum area, Global Village Keepers, its team of volunteers and support has been here for quite some time.
It was the fishermen in 5 districts in the state of Kerala that dropped what they were doing --providing for their families-- loaded their prized boats onto trucks and immediately went to the affected areas that were flooded in Kerala. The monsoon season brings annual moisture but this amount of rain, coupled with the government's prevention of dam failure with a result of releasing the water out of the reservoirs, overwhelmed just about all of the state of Kerala.
Disasters commonly attract those who want to help but it's much different in India than it is in our country. The fishermen that dropped everything to help their fellow brethren are at the bottom of the caste system. In America, they'd be looked at as very low class, poor people. These fishermen saw it differently though and didn't waste time wondering if they should help or not because of their lowest caste. They just went. And through it all, according to the Associated Press, saved an approximate 54,000 lives!! Only 370 (at the time of this writing) have been reported as having lost their lives.
Many of these fishermen were getting down on all 4's and allowing the women to step on their backs as they climbed into their boats to safety. Selfless.
Our nonprofit, Global Village Keepers, contributes to those who help others. This is why we decided to put together this crowdfunding campaign... to raise money that will go directly to the children of these fishermen in the villages where they congregate. They have given their all and now we'd like to return the favor with funds that will help their families (and their children) with their education and food if needed.
Please join us in raising money for these selfless and caring people that helped their countrymen, women and children without so much as thinking about the risks they took, not to mention their boats are mostly now ruined. Thank you!
