Hi everyone! On May 5th, myself along with 50 other volunteers are travelling to Ghana, Africa through an organization called Global Medical Brigades. We will take part in a 10 day brigade which includes 4 clinic days, door-to-door visits, and a public health day. During this time each volunteer is given the opportunity to shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. More specifically, we work closely with the Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Program in the Mfantseman District that has a doctor to patient ratio of 1 : 48,029. The main health concerns within the communities include malaria, waterborne illnesses, hypertension, and upper respiratory tract infections. I am so thankful and fortunate that I have the opportunity to take part in this eye opening and life-changing experience. The trip is going to cost $2500 per volunteer and being a student I hope to fundraise a portion of this cost.
