In 2005 my son Samuel was born. It was the best day ever but I could never imagine that one day he will not be able to see me any more. When he was one year and a half, Samuel was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma (cancer of both eyes). We used to go to UK for treatment. At the age of two his right eye had to be removed. In the meantime, he had to have chemotherapy. The doctors used to tell me that if he will stay 5 years without traces, his left eye would be salvaged. Unfortunately, at the age of eight, my world was shattered again. He had several treatments in UK, of which radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but to no avail. The last option was a new treatment that was being given in Switzerland. We took the challenge and went to Switzerland. At first Samuel was responding to the treatment but unfortunately, this caused several other problems, of which he had retinal detachment. He was operated to correct the detachment. However, the treatment had to be discontinued again because he was relapsing again and again. The last decision was to remove his other eye. This was the greatest shock for me. So in 2014 we flew again to UK but this time I knew that Sam would never see me again.

Now Samuel is in secondary school and this year he will be sitting for his o’levels. He is studying history and European Studies. Although he cannot see, he has proved to all that he can do everything that other guys do at his age. He is happy and very intelligent. He enjoys drama and is fascinated with history. His wishes are that when he finishes schooling in Malta, he will go abroad to continue studying and working and above all sharing his positiveness.

Although he is very bright and takes every challenge as an achievement, he has one wish which I cannot fully fulfil, that is being independent. It is hard when he is faced with challenges and I have been looking at possible solutions. Recently, we have been introduced to an AI device which might be really helpful in fulfilling his dream - the Orcam. This device has the ability to read text, recognises faces, read bar codes and money, to name but a few. However, this device is quite costly for me. I wish that I was rich so that I could offer this device and give him some liberty and help him be more independent. Thus, I am asking for your generous help. It is not easy for me to ask for help but I wish to make my son happy.
