Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our fund raiser.
Last October, at only 51 years of age, our mother was hit with a double whammy medical diagnosis that left us reeling – Stage One Leukemia, and Congestive Heart Failure. Mum was booked off work for testing, and lost her job. My younger brother lost his job due to cut-backs early in 2015, and in December, I was retrenched from the job I had been working at for years. Without any income at all, we were thrown into a seemingly unending cycle of poverty, empty cupboards and eviction notices. If not for the kind-heartedness of a friend of the church inviting us to stay in the cottage on his farm, we wouldn’t have a roof over our heads at all.
Ever since the day we have been out of work, we have been searching for new jobs. Unemployment in South Africa is a terrifying prospect, where many qualified people can’t find work for years. Despite our extensive experience in our respective fields, we haven’t had so much as a call back in almost a year of sending applications & approaching businesses. We’ve sold almost every possession we’ve ever owned simply to keep us fed, and at times we’ve had nothing more than homemade bread for weeks on end. Mum is still, to this day, medically untreated for either of her life-threatening conditions- private healthcare is impossible to pay for, and national healthcare is so overburdened, we’re still waiting for her to get an appointment with a Cardiologist.
The reason we’re reaching out with this fundraiser is simple. We want to move to England, where my mother will be able to get the healthcare that she so desperately needs, and the standard of living she so rightly deserves for the selfless and loving way that she has provided for our family all our lives. Mum was born in the UK and is a British subject, meaning that my brother and I both have citizenship by descent – an absolute blessing, and it makes this whole move possible. In England, we all have better opportunities, and our goal is to start our own catering company, uniting our passions, talent and creativity and finally living the kind of lives we have always worked so hard for, but have always fallen short of due to circumstance. In building our own company, we can create jobs and empower more families like ourselves, both with employment and donations.
The amount that we are requesting in this fundraiser covers – Our British Passport applications, our flights and medical treatment for mum until we depart. Any additional funds raised will be put towards getting our business off the ground once we are in England.
