My name is Heather and I have a big dream. You see, I've had a rough time growing up, but I've never let it stop me from living, loving, and growing. I have overcome some of the toughest odds, being sexually and verbally abused as a child and bullied by peers throughout the years in school. I was quiet back then, but I had an angel watching out for me every step of the way because instead of turning to drugs, I stayed in school and strived to be that better person who saw good in everyone.
One of the biggest blessings that helped me get through life was the life of another; my pet. Two of them, to be precise. I had a dog that I cherished more than anything, and a cat that was my world. They were my best friends and gave me the strength I needed, whether it was my cat creeping his way into my lap when I was upset and in tears, or my dog nuzzling her nose against my arm to remind me I wasn't alone.
Today, grown up and married, we have many fur kids that have done so much for us. Our babies have come from all walks of life, from shelters to ferals off the streets, and everyone one of them have given their love and support.
And here is my dream; I want to give back to them!
We have five wonderful kitties and three precious dogs that I want to give the world to. AND, most importantly, I want to give back to all the homeless animals living in shelters.
What my goal is:
I would like to travel to all 50 states in the USA and volunteer at a shelter in each state for 7 days. What does this mean? It means staying in a new place for a whole week to help a shelter-in-need with bathing, feeding, walking, cleaning kennels, and spending time with those animals who have nothing to call their own. Every state would get its own week of volunteer work.
I would like to donate pet food! Many shelters rely on donations to feed their never-ending supply of homeless pets.
I would also like to construct and donate special elevated beds for cats and dogs living at that specific shelter when I visit. This means that while volunteering, I'll also be giving those animals a better place to sleep at night. They can easily be cleaned and are sturdy, reusable beds. For cats, it also gives them a little more room and added security when they are locked inside those tiny 2x2 cages.
And finally, I would like to give back to my furkids, because I wouldn't be here today without them. We have a small home that needs help. Our windows are held together with tape, all of them fogged white and most cracked or busted out in chunks. Our cats can't see outside and the home is left cold in the winter because of the draft, and hot in the summer. We also have a spare room that is dedicated solely for our pets. We would really like to build ramps and perches, as well as beds and toys to give them more space and freedom.
All-in-all, this is big dream, but one I won't give up on. I want to be able to make a trip to a shelter and spend the entire 7 days working to give back to those animals in need around the country.
And why travel so far and wide? Because there are so many shelters in the USA that don't get that help. While there, I'll be able to document my progress and spread their story (the animals) so that they may have a better chance of finding a perfect new home, while getting their new beds and special attention.
What your contributions will cover:
Cost of supplies to build pet beds like PVC, fabric, glues, screws etc.
Tools needed to build those beds.
Pet food for the shelter
Travel/living expenses like gas, food, etc.
Repairs on windows
Cost of supplies for pet room
Tools needed for pet room
Again, thank you for taking the time to read my story! Help me make a dream come true for them!
*For those wondering about what shelter I would pick to visit in each state, I will leave that choice in your hands. I would like to start in Florida and work my way North from there. So, since I would like to start in Florida, donors who donate in the first $5,000 bracket, please add a comment stating what city in FLORIDA I should volunteer in. The most requested shelter gets the vote.
When that venture is complete, we will move on to the next state and an update will be posted! Common Question: Why set the limit at $100,000 when there are 50 states to cover? Because I honestly don't know what will happen with this fund raiser. I'll leave it in your hands, but there is no limit on this fundraiser.
