I first met Ali Yahya Mahmoud when he was 17. He had already been living for years with a brain tumor that was gradually destroying his life and eventually would threaten it.

Today he is 19 years old and lives in the working-class Beirut suburb of Bourj Hammoud with his parents. The brain tumor has already caused him to lose his vision and affected his development. In recent medical consultations, his doctor said if it is not removed, it will eventually kill him.

A previous surgery was unsuccessful, but Ali's case is by no means hopeless - however, it requires a best-in-class surgical team. Finally, he has been referred to such a top-notch medical team at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). His doctors there believe that they can perform a procedure to successfully remove the tumor and save his life.

Ali wants to say yes to life. His parents desparately want that, too, but they have very modest means and simply cannot cover the costs of such a surgery in Lebanon's privatized and very expensive healthcare system.

AUBMC has already given a reduction of the hospital fee in consideration of the family's circumstances, but a cost of $14,000 remains.

Ali's options for support are limited, because while his mother is Lebanese, his father is Syrian. Under Lebanon's nationality law, which only allows men to pass citizenship to their children, this means that Ali does not have the Lebanese nationality and thus is not eligible for public assistance.

The UN refugee agency, which covers some medical procedures for Syrians in Lebanon, does not generally cover conditions requiring long term, specialized and high-cost treatment such as this, and most of the NGOs that would assist with such cases reserve their assistance for children under the age of 18, meaning that Ali has "aged out" of eligibility.

As such, the family is relying on private contributions to raise the cost of the surgery and follow-up care. It is on all of us to help Ali live a life of peace and health. The sooner we can raise the funds, the sooner we can get Ali the care he needs and give this sweet, gentle young man a new lease on life.

We are very happy to report that Ali underwent his surgery today at the American University of Beirut Medical Center and is doing very well. He will be in the hospital for about three days and will need to do follow-up X-rays to ensure the tumor is gone, but so. . . . .
