Give a Chance for online Education

Life does not provide the same chance equally to everyone.

Children living in segregated Roma settlements have much worse access to quality education, than the majority of young people.

Studies prove that segregated education worsens childrens chances for a lifetime: they struggle finding a job, they give up their dreams at the age of 11, and the health of those, who drop out of the education system before finishing a secondary school deteriorates a lot faster.

BAGázs Association supports vulnerable Roma communities in Hungary, with many focuses inculding children development. One of the specializes for the age group of teenagers.

And what is special about this program and it's method?

Our staff maintains contact with adolescents, their parents and with the institution, where they study several times a week. Based on these, volunteers learn 2-3 times a week with the teenagers, who get chips during online classes, which can be redeemed for a monthly incentive, that really motivates them to learn. Such as a new accessory for his favorite role-playing game, a cool schoolbag or a pizza with volunteers.

In addition to incentives, the greatest retention force is the personal attention that our staff and volunteers give to adolescents.

Sadly the COVID-19 pandemic is preventing our volunteers from travelling to the settlements as much as needed. We still deliver a lot of our programs through online platforms, focusing on giving digital tools and providing online tutoring for all the children.

We ask for your support not only to get through this difficult time, but to reduce its irreversibly detrimental effects.

• provide more attention for 15 teenagers online education living in the settlements of Bag and Dány
• involve and train new volunteers

• organize more expert examinations
• provide digital tools and online learning interfaces

Bagazs works in two segregated Roma settlements in rural Hungary. Since 2011, we have been devoted to delivering programs in education, literacy, livelihood skills, financial inclusion and women’s empowerment. All these programs are set up based on the local needs a motivation to learn; we do not provide any material donations. As we like to say: we only give a chance.

Today, we engage 145 Roma children and 220 community members through our programs and help empower them to have a brighter future.
