GirlREACH: Improving Girls Toilets in Rural Schools

Project Summary

GirlREACH provides better toilets and water points for girls in rural schools. The goal is to contnue improving the water and sanitaion systems for 200 girls in primary schools in the rural communities and help them learn well and improve on performance. Most girls in rural schools do not have proper sanitary provisions and thus they fail to stay in school. This normally contributes to their absenteeism. This project proposes to built 15 modern toilets with running water source so as to allow girls have better sanitary facilities. Train them in hygiene and sanitary restocking for their monthly periods and support their advocacy work against poor toilet facilities.

1. Construct 15 toilets in 15 selected rural primary schools and

2. Provide better sanitary options for 200 girls through capacity building.

3. Facilitate knowledge on how to make safe sanitary pads and restocking.

Potential Long-term Impacts

This project will help girls to live a better life and concentrate in school without them bieng disturbed or staying away when they are passing through the monthly period. Generational poverty will be changed with advocacy, information and health support. GirlREACH will help poor girls get the opportunity to access cheaper pads and health support they need to get to and breakthrough poverty. If they have strong support, they will be less likely to fail to stay in school, which in turn help increase their opportunities to be successful in life.

“I am unable to stay in school whenever am having periods because of the poor sanitary facilities. So my mother tells me to stay home until it is over. Thus I miss lessons and perform badly during examinations.”
