BACKSTORY

Please help us raise funds to pay for our mom's hospital bills and medical equipment.

On November 11, 2023, Mommy Gigie (64 years old, retired) complained of severe shortness of breath and asked to be brought to the ER. Confident that her prepaid Maxicare ER card would cover all of her costs, she was brought to the Makati Med ER. Her initial diagnosis at the ER was heart failure and fluid in her lungs, so they recommended that she be admitted for confinement in the ICU.

Since we all do not have health insurance , we tried calling other hospitals nearby to look for a more affordable option. Alas, PGH was already at 200% capacity and had no more rooms available. St. Clare's ICU is temporarily closed due to lack of nurses. Because we wanted Mommy Gigie's vitals to stabilize right away and since she was already in critical condition, we eventually agreed to have her admitted into the Makati Med ICU.

Mommy Gigie spent 5 days in the Telemetry unit, a step below the ICU. It was during those 5 days that it was determined she has COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and would need supplemental oxygen for the rest of her life. The doctors were also worried about her potassium levels, which still remained too low despite various medications and treatments.

It was also found in her CT scan that she has multiple nodules on her thyroid gland, 2 of which are mildly suspicious. All in all the endocrinologist thinks they are slow-growing and would not need urgent attention, but nonetheless recommends surgery to remove the thyroid gland. Leaving the thyroid growth untreated might cause heart arrhythmia later on.

Mommy Gigie has spent the last 3 days in a semi-private room after "graduating" from Telemetry, and is currently hoping to be discharged soon.

HELP NEEDED

As of this writing, Mommy Gigie's running hospital bill is at P560,395.49. She cannot be discharged yet, as her doctors want to make sure her potassium levels and other vitals are all stable and manageable. We will also need to purchase an oxygen tank for standby use at home, and a portable oxygen tank for use while traveling -- we need to purchase one before she is discharged from the hospital. She will also need to continue outpatient treatments, medications, and laboratory procedures, to address other medical problems like her thyroid.
