Gift of Sight

Hello, my name is Mark. I'm a single dad living in Johannesburg, South Africa.

At the beginning of April I had a consultation with an eye surgeon who confirmed that I have a cataract forming on my right eye. It is already covering more than 40% of the lens and growing. Before this year is over I may have already lost all sight in my right eye.

The laser surgery is fairly simple and will restore full sight within an day or two after surgery.

The issue is the cost. R25 000. I have no medical aid or insurance. There simply is not enough money each month to make the payments. Trying to save up the money would take too long. Trying to get a loan from the bank would be difficult, as both options fall foul of the same monthly income shortfall. Government hospitals have waiting lists too long to contemplate, and the risk factor is high.

I have decided to appeal to you, the stranger reading this. My friends and family may be willing to assist where they can, but they too are dealing with all sorts of financial issues, like most people today. I have never been one for charities and fund-raising. I help out in whatever way I can and choose. I have always tried to do everything myself. Asking for help does not come naturally or easily to me.

Loosing my sight, if only partially, is scary. Scary enough to force me ask for help. Your help. In whatever small way you can. Every donation will be received with gratitude and humbleness.
