Help children in Malawi gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve a brighter future through education.
Hello! My name is Lindsey, I am from the United States but I am currently in Chikwawa, Malawi volunteering with an organization called Youth Coalition for the Consolidation of Democracy (YCD). YCD's mission is to protect and improve the livelihoods of children, youth, women and disadvantaged groups through education, training, economic empowerment, awareness and participation.
Malawi is currently the poorest country in the world. More than 60% of the population lives on less than $1.25/day. In the district of Chikwawa, only 9.3% of children complete secondary education (high school). I am seeing these statistics firsthand, which has motivated me to take action.
Here at the YCD, we believe that every child has the right to an education and that education is key to the fight against our major issues: poverty, gender inequality and child protection. Education is not a free handout, it is not a quick fix; it is something that will benefit a child for the rest of their lives. YCD fights everyday to get kids off the street, free girls from forced marriages and spread awareness in the communities about current issues. It is amazing what they are doing, but without support there is little they can continue to do for these children.
Our goal is to put as many disadvantaged children as possible back into school by the start of the next school term: September 12, 2017. Primary education (6-14 years old) costs $96/year and secondary education (15-18 years old) costs $216/year, including costs of entry, uniform, school supplies, etc.
We have also started a Sponsor a Child Program on our website which you can check out if interested: https://youthcoalitionanddemocracy.wordpress.com/sponsor-a-child/
Anything you can contribute towards this project will be greatly appreciated. Lets get these kiddos back in school where they belong!
