  • Hello, My name is Melanie and I am an English Teacher in South America but I am from the U.K. I am currently holding this fundraiser to get me home to look after my Mum. She has a hip replacemet on 5th October and I really want to be there for her when she come out of hospital, to look after her for a few weeks. I have lived here in South America on and off for 6 years, and up until last year, I had enough English funds still in my bank to go home. I worked 5 jobs saved £9000 to travel and do voluntary work here and have done so for this amount of time. I worked in the Peruvian Andes for many years for an NGO and although I was given some money, the money I saved help to suppliment my income. I also worked in orphanages while I was travelling and taught English for free on my way around. I came here with an intent to do some good and receive teachings at the same time and that is exactly what I got and I am very lucky.
  • About my Mum: My mum is Chef and mother of 5. She has pretty much bought her children up on her own and has worked like a trooper her whole life. She has never claimed benefits or ever been out of work (only for pregnancy and still worked until she almost dropped). This has a lot to do with why she is in the state she is in now at only 57 years old. She has worked an average of 70 hour weeks in kitchens for as long as I can remember and before that she was an award winning manager and part of a lot of great businesses. She is a fantastic cook and a hard working single mum. I never know how amazing she was until I saw my own mates crumble with just one child on their own. I have never seen my mum be weak or need anything, until now. She has always been an amazingly hard worker and I am so proud of her for working so hard to raise me and my brothers.
  • THE PLAN: The plan is to go home for two weeks when my mum leaves hospital so I can help her adjust and work out who can help do what for her over the months of her recovery. The recovery is the critical part and the amount of rest she has will determine how successful her operation is. Yes this is routine operation these days, but it is painful and if you don't rest enough it can be complicated. She has to have her house modified so she does not sit down or climb stairs etc, the adjustment is going to be tough. Luckily I teach a lot on the internet and with a 4 hour time difference it won't be too bad, but I can't leave my fiancee, my house and my other clients for more that a few weeks.
  • I am sure there are some questions so I have tried to answer them below:
  • why don’t I borrow the money? I cannot borrow money here as I am not a resident and for me as a working class person here, it would take me years to pay back the money, while maintaining my basic standard of life. I am not a materialistic person, nor do I spend money needlessly, but once you enter into the economic system of South American countries, you start to understand that travelling to Europe is for the more privileged in society. I am not starving or poor but the money I earn just does not translate into having the money to buy a ticket or borrow the money. · As well as this, I am currently undergoing fertility treatment and I have to pay for all the tests as I am not entitled to free health care or health insurance. This will hopefully change once I am married but this will all take time and my mother needs me now not next year!. ·
  • Why £1250.00? I have looked for flights 3 months from now and they are approximately £1100. By the time I get the money, I will be booking a lot closer to the time of travel and this will mean they will be more expensive, if I find one cheaper. I will return the last donation that came in. Also, if you look for flights from South American to the U.K, they are always more expensive than from U.K to South America. I would love to know why, but any regular traveller to this continent will know this. You next question maybe, I am buying a return because my financee is here and well we live here. I just want to be home to make sure my mum gets a good level of care when she comes out of hospital.
  • Why don’t I borrow the money from my family? The answer is quick, my Dad is a pensioner, my brothers don’t have any money to spare and I don’t have any grandparents alive, so there is no inheritance or other generation to ask. I have put below some information of what a little could do from just 125 people and I hope you will help me to raise the money, so I can go home and be with my mum at this time. I am happy to answre any questions or do any kind of exchange for the money (Internet English classes · To put it in perspective of how a little can help, I have put some maths below. · 1
  • 0 x 125 people = 1250 quid
    20 X 62.5 people = 1250 quid
    25 X 50 25 people = 1250 quid
    50 x 25 people = 1250 quid. · ·
  • I want to thank you for taking the time for reading this and wish you all the luck in the future. · Love to all Melanie
