INTRODUCTION

Hello Everyone! My name is Naia and I am a friend of Doni Singadikrama, the founder of Indisczinepartij. As an integral part of Yogyakarta's zine preservation, this Indonesian organization has truly proved itself to be a gem in its local DIY, or Do It Yourself, community. The work that they have done in order to archive and research zine and zine culture in their city is tremendous, so much so that they have captured international attention. They have the opportunity to research and be a guest at Osaka's Zine Day, held in Osaka, Japan. This self-made group is honored by this opportunity, but needs help getting there!

The money raised will be going to support Doni and his team of 4 in participating in this event. This includes transportation, meals, and other costs. We are asking for $4,700 USD which converts into the needed amount in IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) and JPY (Japanese Yen) for Doni to use.

Please and THANK YOU for donating and making this incredible opportunity happen for this hardworking group! Your donation will be going towards the development of zine, art and sub-culture, especially in Indonesia.

The following items are more information about zines, Indisczinepartij, and a complete budget for this event. Thank you for reading!

ABOUT ZINES AND ZINE CULTURE IN YOGYAKARTA

Zine, short for fanzine or magazine, is an alternative media publication that is published by an individual or small group and is usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines have always been subcultural, more known for its impact in punk subcultures. Due to this, there are many ways to define what a zine is. The definition of zine according to KUNCI Cultural Studies Centre states that zine is “ a dissemination form of science and knowledge.” According to Dito Yuwono (founder of LIR space, an alternative space in Yogyakarta), zine is a publication product that puts aside the business framework. Whereas according to Stephen Duncombe, professor of Media and Culture at the Steinhardt School of New York University, zine is the non-profit, non-professional media that self-published in a small-circulation. Zine is a form of media to spread any information. The content itself is not strictly limited to art-related content, but also cover broad topics as well as current and past issues.

The term “Zine” was introduced in the 1920’s by the science fiction fandom in U.S. This very idea emerged at the beginning of the recognition of mass printing machines with xerography technology. Later on, zines were developed and adopted by the punk culture in the ‘70s. Meanwhile in Indonesia, zines are dominated by pop culture and have flourished again in 2012 by the contribution of Bandung Zine Fest, an annual zine festival that does much for developing the zine network at a national scale.

ABOUT Indisczinepartij.

Indisczinepartij was first started as a small zine festival that was founded by Doni Singadikrama. This event took place in Yogyakarta in 2016. As a festival, Indisczinepartij gained a lot of positive responses from various people and organizations, which then led it to develop from a festival into a Yogyakarta-based zine laboratory and library. Currently, Indisczinepartij focuses on collecting zines from many different people and places with more than 500 zines collected from 2016 to today. Through its organized, extensive and popular archival library, Indisczinepartij acts on its responsibility towards making wisdom and knowledge accessible. An accomplished research project completed by Indisczinpartij includes, ZAMAN: a short research about zine in Yogyakarta. ZAMAN was presented with the archived zine collection in an exhibition which featured narratives about zine’s tendencies from each wave. This exhibition, was held on June 18th, 2017 at LIR Space, Yogyakarta.

Part of their work also includes researching the history and cultural significance that zines have in society. This is why it is so important for them to have this opportunity. They would not only be participating in zine day as an organization, but also conducting research for their next project, a cross cultural assessment of zine culture.
