A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO MYSELF

My name is Nur Zarifah Hanis Sanusi, a.k.a. Hanis, from Malaysia and I am an aspiring future architect in the making. I just graduated from Bachelor of Environmental Design, Majoring in Architecture (Part 1) and looking forward to continuing Master of Architecture (Part 2). I was studying at University of Tasmania (UTAS) for my bachelor’s degree and I am very fortunate to be given the opportunity to continue my studies to the masters by coursework program at UTAS as well.

WHY AN ARCHITECT?

I am very passionate on sustainable and humanitarian design in architecture and my ultimate goal in life is to give back to the community for a better future, and I believe having a shelter and a place to call home and find comfort in it is one of the basic essentials to live life as a human. Thus, I can give back to the lives of the less fortunate in this world for the better through architecture.

HOW TO BECOME AN ACCREDITED ARCHITECT

Architecture course is divided to 3-part course; Part 1 being an undergraduate degree (3 years), Part 2 being a master’s degree (2 years), and Part 3 is where you become an accredited architect. And in my case, I’ve only completed Part 1. This is why I’m very keen to continue my studies to Part 2 as it brings me a step closer to accomplishing all 3-part courses, thus become the architect I aspire to be.

WHY MAKE A CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN?

Throughout my years studying undergraduate, I have been working part-time odd jobs and working on campus for almost 20 hours per week to save for my school fees for each coming semester and sometimes get the opportunity to participate in Summer Scholarship Awards by the university which adds up to my school fees savings. I also take up any opportunities to sell food during festivals and events. Alhamdulillah (praises to God), my savings have been enough to pay for each coming semester, with the additional help from my parents to top-up the 20-25% of the school fees that I’m short off for some semesters. However, the school fees for the master studies has gone up double the undergraduate fees, I am now short of 50% to pay up for the first semester fees.

Educational loans have been applied but I am yet to receive any positive news by the deadline of accepting the offer letter. Due to certain financial circumstances that my family is facing currently, with my dad being the sole provider, my mom not being able to work due to health restrictions and having my 2 siblings studying in Egypt; one in his 5^th year of Medical School (Paid Education) and one studying Syariah Islamiyyah (Free Education), and the youngest one just about to start university, I don’t want to burden my parents for my higher education. Even though I am very conflicted due to this financial issue, my desire to finish part 2 of Architecture is still very strong so that I can work professionally as an architect I aspire to be and help my family financially at the same time. Thus, why I decided to make this campaign.

I am looking to find funding support for only my first semester to get a kick start for me to be able to enroll for the master’s program for this July intake. Because I believe, even if other financial support options that have been applied are to be denied, with my ability and qualification, now, to work in an Architecture firm, part-time, and doing odd-jobs and summer jobs, I will be able to save up for the coming semesters. Therefore, being the optimistic person I am, I figured that crowd funding could be a great opportunity for me to get this kick start.
