What am I doing?

As part of my "gap yah", I have always wanted to go travelling and volunteer abroad. Over the past 2 years I've discovered my passion for teaching and childcare, and so I decided that I wanted to do this in Vietnam. Therefore I will be going there for 6 weeks to teach English in Hanoi October/November 2017.

Why Vietnam?

In the past 20 years Vietnam has seen a significant poverty decrease and higher economic growth. However, Vietnam is still a struggling country and recovering from the effects of the war including the effects of Agent Orange. With education becoming an increasingly important issue in Vietnam, it is more vital than ever that schools have enough English teachers (especially FROM England) to come over and help the children with speaking and communication skills which the teachers in Vietnam are often limited of themselves.

What will I be doing whilst I'm out there?

I am signing up to the Childcare project in Hanoi, North Vietnam. This involves working with years ranging from 2-11 years depending on the specific programme you are with, and helping them with basic english skills, writing skills in both english and their 1st language, along with maths which will follow them as they grow up. They also focus on doing lots of sports and creative activities to help these underprivileged children feel less vulnerable and more excited to learn. In each class there is around 45 students with some of the children there being mentally impaired, meaning volunteers like me will be a great help to the incredibly hard working staff out there.

What will I be doing to fundraise?

As part of getting people to donate and sponsor me for this once in a lifetime trip, I am going to be completing the London to Brighton cycle ride in September of 2017. I really wanted to take up a physical challenge this year and thought this would be a perfect way to combine that and fundraising for my trip.

How does your money help?

PGMY Charity are a registered charity that aim to help redevelop projects in countries that are still not as economically and socially developed and some western countries. Donations raised go directly to the projects, for example the school project helps hem buy new equipment whether that be whiteboards, sporting equipment, musical instruments. However, there are other projects within this like the medical project which invest money into helping them buy new technology and medicine.

Why should you help me fundraise?

This is something that is very close to my heart and something that I want to keep doing for the rest of my life as I hope to end up being involved in childcare full-time whether it being primary school teaching, working in a nursery, etc. To be able to help children far less fortunate than ourselves is so important. It is inexplainable how doing things like this heavily influences these peoples lives in such a positive way and help them one day achieve the standard of living that we all are lucky enough to have in the UK. Being there for 6 weeks, I will be able to witness the growth and improvements that are made by programmes like these and be able to see first hand that charity events such as the London to Brighton cycle ride really make a huge difference to other peoples lives. As I know money does not grow on trees, any donations at all will be so appreciated and I promise to put my heart and soul into the work whilst I'm out there to make the trip worthwhile. Thank you so much in advance, I won't let you down! #GetEstoVietnam
