My name is David Wayne. I've recently taken on new roles in my community as both a newly elected member of a non-profit Board of Directors and leadership rolls in my college's MedFLAG student group. As part of these rolls I'm trying to help prepare myself to better help those I'm leading. This entails some type of professional development. And I would REALLY like to attend a health forum on LGBT health needs that is happening in San Francisco. This is a fantastic city for LGBT resources and would offer an excellent chance to create a network of people I can call upon to help me create change in West Michigan.

I'll admit, Grand Rapids - MI isn't the best and most forward thinking place in the State of Michigan. We have issues that we are working through and a large LGBT community that is both closeted or conservative in their public affiliation with the community. That doesn't stop them from being true to themselves and living their life the way they choose. As a medical student I see that there is a disparity in our Medical sphere, especially in this part of the country, in treating and encouraging trust and confidentuality with our LGBT patients. To make a change we need to create some point people who can help facilitate changing the mindsets that exist. I want to be a part of that in both my leadership roles at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine and in the community.
Please help me get to this Health Conference at UCSF!
