Update 10. April 2019
Your willingness to help makes us speechless and we want to say thank you again! 🙏 Finally the nasty virus is out of Dan's body an the blood results are getting normal again. With your donations we were able to cover the incurred costs 🙏 at the moment we are waiting for Dan's energy to come back, so we can leave the hospital hopefully soon. Many hugs and take care 😘
Update for Dani’s health status:
Monday, 8. April 2019
just wanted to come and (first of all) say a HUGE thank you to everyone who’s supported the fundraiser so far. We are blown away by your generosity; it’s going to hopefully cover the biggest costs of the first days he spent in the ICU. 🙏
But let’s get to the extra important stuff- an update on Dan:
Thankfully we have good news so far. His critical condition has been stabilised and he is now awake and conscious. There’s still a long way to go though, since he experienced such severe damage (including having a dangerously low platelet count in his blood for some time). His blood results are improving now.
But the really exciting news is that as of today he’s started to speak and walk again (also slowly, very slowly) with the help of a physiotherapist. All going well, we’re told he can move out of the ICU and into a normal room tomorrow.
The bad news is that Dan’s experiencing really severe pain all over his body, which makes moving, talking, and even sleeping extremely uncomfortable. Even so, we’re in total admiration of how far he’s come- and we know that he’s strong enough to beat this virus!
Thank you all again for your ongoing support, and please keep sharing this page to help Dan get the remainder of money needed to fund his hospital stay and recovery.

As many of you know, Dan and I travel for about 5 months of every year- and this year was no different. After some time spent kitesurfing and traveling with friends in the Philippines and Thailand, we were just two weeks away from returning to Austria when disaster struck.
Dan was infected with dengue fever last week in Thailand. It began with the usual flu like symptoms but very quickly got worse. He was experiencing extremely severe symptoms which ended with him going into shock and losing consciousness, and he had to be rushed in an ambulance to the ICU in Hua Hin, where he has been since.
It has been a scary few days for us. Dan was unlucky enough to be in the <5% of dengue victims who experience shock and hemorrhaging. The doctors placed him under heavy sedation during the most critical period, but we are happy and relieved to tell you that his condition is now stable and he is slowly but surely regaining consciousness.
Unfortunately, Dan's travel insurance policy had lapsed by just one week when the infection occurred, and the hospital bills are quickly piling up. The charges for his hospitalization and care are looking really steep- and we desperately need the help of his friends in order to get him through the next stages of his recovery.
If you are in a position to, we would hugely appreciate any contribution you can make in helping Dan get back on track! We know Dan is grateful to have friends all over the world; so please if any of you are reading this, now is the time he needs you the most.
Thank you all, and much love to you from Thailand,
Julia & Family
