Gaza Cemetery Community Fundraiser

Update posted by Celia Peterson On Aug 08, 2015

Hello everyone!

I have got back from Gaza (twice) and an incredible 2 months in Palestine and just wanted to say a huge thanks one more time to you all.

Gaza is the most incredible place, it's actually my favourite place in Palestine, I find the people really lovely and generally the state of life is intensified by the siege and poverty. It also has the highest unemployment rate in the world. It was so amazing to get such a fantastic response from all of you to help these people. It's sometimes hard knowing who to help as so many people live in abject poverty, with the fear of war over and over again.

When I asked the community how we could best help them, they asked for these bikes. One has been delivered (you can see me 'driving' it there!! We have almost enough money pledged for another one via offline donations from friends and when I am back in 6 months, I will get another one for them. These bikes have increased in price since all the tunnels were destroyed!!

Below are pics of the first tuk tuk and a lady who we gave some cash to bombarded us with vegetables! A hugely generous gift considering their circumstances...

So - thanks again and love to all! Celia

Hi all

With 500 USD of one friend's money, he agreed to spend it on people in Khan Younis who have had their homes destroyed... they were unbelievably grateful and one woman (yellow head scarf) cried when we gave her baby milk for her grand child and 200 aed equivalent. She told me before she wanted to die, rather than live the way they have since the Israelis destroyed their home last year. Nothing has changed for these people, they have had their livelihoods, their homes and their spirits crushed. We are looking into buying them a scooter linked to a cart so they can make money themselves and share it in their community.

The reason we have moved away from the cemetery area was that we were attacked with crow bars just outside and our car was smashed....!!!! It was not the cemetery people, they were thankful for the help but it was too dangerous to go back there... luckily we were ok. We had spent all the money except 500 USD which one friend agreed we could spend on this Khan Younis community instead.

I still have 1,500 USD (from offline donations) and contacting those who's money it is to see if you agree to buy this community in Khan Younis a motorbike so they can actually start making money themselves... seems the best way to do it... many asked me to spend it something sustainable for them. We went through horse, donkey and now bike options!!

Lots of love all! X

Hello all!

Mohamed, Hosam, Osama and I have just got back from the cemetery, having installed the water tank, given them iftar and lots of clothes and food packages. They were extremely grateful for all your support and there is still more to come... I have actually taken the campaign offline now as there is only so much I can do in the time I am here. I also return to Gaza at the end of the month.

Quite a few of you have mentioned you would like some of the money to be spent on educational material or something that might help them sustain themselves. We are now looking into this option for the rest of the cash and I will of course keep you all updated. Love from Gaza! Enjoy the pics!!

Hello lovely friends (and a few I don't know)...
It's a 4,000 USD response in 24 hours, it's truly amazing. We have bought lots of clothes, shoes and a water tank with refill for 3 months and will be delivering all of this tomorrow along with an iftar meal for all of them and a food box. We are then going to sit with them all and find out other stuff they need... I guess that is endless, but they will be truly blown away by this... especially given they think all journatlists and photographers are liars to get the shots they need and claim they will help and don't...

My initial reaction was to leave as soon as I got there... they were not so friendly to start with and one guy has just the most bizarre stories from the war, when the graveyard was hit twice. Perhaps you can imagine what this story might involve, him being in a graveyard and all... more to follow...!

Meanwhile, thanks again for your huge generosity and I will update you all with photos soon.

BIG LOVE from GAZA - an incredible place full of warm people despite their horrendous circumstances. X
