A SHELTER IN CRISIS
To date, there are no active shelters in Baguio other than the shelter provided by Furvent Animal Rescue and Advocacy. The shelter aims to provide a temporary home for rescued strays and unclaimed dogs from the city pound. It aims to rehome these strays, ensure that they are healthy and somehow have learned to socialize with humans and other dogs prior to adoption. It aims to perform a rigid screening process on potential adopters to make sure that these dogs will go to the right owners and will never be abandoned again in the future.
Last January 5, one rescue residing in the shelter tested positive for distemper. He was a hit and run victim and the accident happened on a holiday when, unfortunately, no vet clinics were open. Not even the 24-hour pet hospitals, hence, he was not tested for distemper prior to his entry into the shelter. This virus is airborne and it has killed countless dogs that have not received immediate medical attention. All eleven dogs in the shelter were exposed to the virus and are now in danger of contracting this deadly disease.
We have 3 puppies and 2 senior dogs who are immunocompromised and might not have the strength to fight the virus off if not given the prescribed antibodies that will boost their immune systems. We have a pregnant dog, whose puppies may lose their lives even before they are born.
All these dogs have been deprived of a life that they deserve. Unfortunately for them, they have been either neglected and abandoned by their irresponsible owners or have been born in the streets not knowing what a warm home is. They have been through enough already. The shelter served as their refuge, where they do not need to look for food or a warm bed to sleep on. To some of them, this is the first time to be given food that is only meant for them. The caretakers at the shelter shared a story that during New Year's eve, they gave each dog a piece of ham and the look in their eyes is that of disbelief and amazement as if to say “really? That’s for me?” and that was enough to make them the happiest dogs in the world. These dogs are just beginning to experience a life that is worth living and it is so devastating that they are now in a situation that could threaten their lives.
Friends, please help us save these poor babies. A promising life awaits them. They will need to have the Canglob D shots, distemper tests. Two of our rescues are already confined in the clinic for Distemper and the cost for the confinement of each dog is at 3000/day.
Their running bill and future expenses in total as of today is approximately 60,000 PHP.
The furbabies would be so grateful if you can donate any amount for their vettings.
