Recently, our mother had been diagnosed with Liposarcoma, something that I had only heard in the movies or read in books. In those mediums, it seemed such a fancy word, a plot device to give way for poetry or a heartwarming story about overcoming all odds. But in real life, there is nothing poetic about Liposarcoma. It only brings to mind fear and damage and a road of difficult struggles up ahead. And only very recently, on the 28th of June 2019, like an uninvited guest, Liposarcoma had suddenly entered our lives. My mother had been diagnosed of the condition, something I had to google first to get a clear picture of what we were up against. Liposarcoma is a malignancy of fat cells. It normally appears as a slowly enlarging, painless, non-ulcerated submucosal mass in a middle-aged person, but some lesions grow rapidly and become ulcerated early.

My mother is a dynamic and cheerful woman who would always tell us to enjoy life and looking back, one of the major reasons why we were able to heed her advice and fully enjoy life was because of her sacrifices for us. She used to work in Hongkong as a domestic helper for almost 10 years and that was quite a long time. Difficult— for us, her family who was left behind but unimaginable— for her who worked in a foreign land away from her own family in that amount of time. It was only less than a year ago when she decided to come home for good and since then, it has been a time for catching up, for making new memories as a complete family.

And then the abdominal pains came, heightened suspicions were raised, health concerns were brought to the table and after a collective decision for a medical check-up, my mother turned into a patient. Tests were conducted. At first her Doctor's working diagnosis was just benign Lipoma. A surgery was conducted to remove the big mass on her stomach. After surgery, biopsy was performed and the results all pointed to one culprit— cancer. And Stage 2, apparently.

Our family is battling this sickness together, we are still making new memories and we intend to keep doing so. With the grace and strength of God Almighty, I know my mother, fighter that she is, will make it through. We also greatly appreciate any amount donated for my mother’s 6 sessions of Chemotherapy, hospital bills, and a routine ct scan (after each chemotherapy session). We would also love to be included in your prayers and petitions. Prayer and faith are our ammunition in this battle and we thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, in advance for any help you could extend. God bless each and every one of you.
