Hello, my name is Sylvie and I have decided to spend some of my gap year volunteering at a turtle conservation project in Ambalangoda Sri Lanka with the organisation PMGY (www.planmygapyear.com), a non – profit organization (registered charity number 1169415)
Whilst in Sri Lanka I will Help protect and rehabilitate at-risk sea turtles whilst also volunteering at community development projects. Turtles are under threat in Sri Lanka and volunteers are really needed to help out with conservation efforts. Fishing is one of the major industries in Ambalangoda and the location of the project is very close to the local fisheries port. Sea turtles are often found in fishing nets and many have lost limbs becoming disabled and are no longer able to survive in the wild. Many of these disabled turtles are found by local Sri Lankans who bring them to the project site for rehabilitation and care.
This is an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity that I know will stay with me forever. To participate in this experience, I have to raise around £1600 which I know is a large amount. This will cover the costs of flights, project costs and injections. To further contribute I will be working at 2 different jobs over the summer to cover any additional costs.
The programme aims to rehabilitate disabled turtles and protect turtle eggs that have been stolen by local poachers. I will spend my days caring for the sea turtles that have been rescued and are now living in the project site – typical duties include:
– Cleaning and refilling the turtle tanks.
– Feeding the turtles.
– Painting and drawing in relevance to turtles.
– Cleaning the project premises and the relevant beach area.
– Take care of the nesting area.
– Cleaning the turtle’s shells.
– Collecting turtle eggs and bringing them to a safe location for them to hatch.
– Releasing hatched baby turtles into the sea.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and donate, and I will ensure to keep everyone up to date with posts and information of progress when I am in Sri Lanka, to show each and every one of you who donated where your money is going.
Any contribution, no matter the size, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!
