Fundraising for MORIA 2.0 Refugees Camp, Lesvos

Ciao a tutti,
domani, 5 Dicembre, sarà il mio compleanno e lo passerò sull’Isola di Lesbo, dove mi trovo da circa un mese e mezzo come volontaria all’interno del Campo Profughi di Moria 2.0. Il mio compleanno è il pretesto per chiedere il vostro aiuto. Lavoro per una ONG chiamata Drop in the Ocean assieme ad altri volontari, e parte di loro sono gli stessi ragazzi che abitano nel campo e che sono bloccati qui in attesa che qualcuno decida la sorte della loro richiesta di asilo. I miei colleghi, i miei amici, sono tutti ragazzi neanche trentenni, molti di loro hanno meno di 20 anni. Alcuni sono qui da soli, ve lo immaginate, lasciare la propria casa, la propria terra, la propria famiglia, se c’è ancora, la propria cultura, per un passo nel vuoto che, per quanto possa andare male probabilmente sarebbe comunque un’alternativa migliore al restare? Certo che no, non lo immagino nemmeno io. E questa è la fortuna più grande del mondo, abbiamo la fortuna più grande del mondo: la nostra libertà e la nostra vita con le persone che amiamo. I miei amici sono qui da anni, molti di loro stanno passando la loro adolescenza qui, bloccati in un posto che non lascia spazio ai sogni, alle passioni, alla crescita, alla dignità. Sono sopravvissuti, sono tanto più coraggiosi di me, di noi probabilmente, sono la resilienza della vita e della volontà. Non hanno sicuramente bisogno di me, sono i primi a tendermi una mano o un impermeabile quando il vento e la pioggia spazzano quest’isola dell’Egeo, a offrirmi una tazza di tè quando ho le mani congelate. Non hanno sicuramene bisogno di me, dicevo, ma il posto in cui voglio essere è al loro fianco, l’unica cosa che voglio fare è tendere loro una mano, anche se congelata, rendere la loro vita qui un po’ meno complicata. Non semplice, solo meno complicata. E cercare dei significati, tutti i giorni.

Ecco, questo è il regalo più grande che possiate farmi, aiutare a rendere tutto un po’ meno peggio di quello che è. Vi giuro che anche se sembra niente, conta. Vi ringrazio dal profondo del mio cuore!

Hello everyone,
tomorrow, December 5th, it will be my birthday and I will spend it on the island of Lesvos, where I have been for about a month and a half as a volunteer in Moria 2.0 Refugee Camp. My birthday is an excuse to ask for your help. I work for an NGO called Drop in the Ocean along with other volunteers, and part of them are the same guys who live in the camp and are stuck here, waiting for someone to decide the fate of their asylum request. My colleagues, my friends, are all boys in their thirties, many of them are under 20 years old. Some of them came here alone, can you imagine, leaving your home, your land, your family, if there is still, their culture, for a step into the void which, however bad it may go, would probably still be a better alternative to staying? Of course not, I don't even imagine it. And this is the greatest luck in the world, we have the greatest luck in the world: our freedom and our life with the people we love. My friends have been here for years, many of them are spending their adolescence here, stuck in a place that leaves no space for dreams, passions, growth, dignity. They survived, they are so much braver than me, probably than us, they are the resilience of life and will. They definitely don't need me, they are the firsts to give you a hand or a raincoat when the wind and rain sweeps this Aegean island, to offer me a cup of tea when my hands are frozen. They sure don't need me, I was saying, but the place I want to be is by their side, the only thing I want to do is to give them an hand, even if frozen, to make their life here a little less complicated. Not simple, just less complicated. And look for meanings, every day.

Here, this is the greatest gift you can give me, to help make everything a little less worse than it is. I swear to you that even if it seems like nothing, it counts. I thank you with all my heart!
