On the 24th of May 2016, our son Lucas Dominic was born. He was thin and fragile looking, but he cried really loud at the Delivery Room. At that very moment, I knew that I would do everything I can to raise my little angel well. The first few hours after birth was challenging, Lucas was not able to latch properly on my breast, hence we needed to feed him with breast milk using a dropper during those vital moments. Days passed and still his latching ability did not improve, and my body was not able to provide milk for my only son. I badly wanted to buy an electronic pump to get more milk however we were still in debt after the delivery. It broke my heart realizing that I was not able to properly provide him the nourishment that he needs. It was a blessing that a family friend who also gave birth a few months before Lucas was born offered help by sharing her breast milk to my boy.
During his fir two months, we observed that Lucas was not gaining weight. He also seemed to have a hard time drinking his milk from his feeding bottles. During one of his check-ups, his pediatrician advised us to seek the help of a pediatric cardiologist as he heard murmurs in Lucas's chest. Upon visit to the pedia-cardio and after further examinations, the doctor informed us that Lucas has ventricular septal defect (VSD), a congenital condition which means he has a hole in the wall that separates the lower chambers of his heart.
With this, his little heart has to work harder to pump blood out to his small body and a surgery is very much advised since the hole is quite big. We cried our hearts out upon hearing this painful news. I started to blame myself, if only I ate more healthy food or maybe if I rested more instead of going to work during my pregnancy perhaps my little angel would not experience this. I lost count of how many times I wished that it was me who was sick and not my son. If only I can trade my good health for his.
Then I realized the promise I made myself when Lucas was born, I would do everything to raise my son well. And so I got to my feet and decided to be strong for my child and for my family. My son is a fighter, he always is, and hence I cannot give up on this challenge just because of monetary problems. Lucas’ pedia-cardio advised us to have his open heart surgery as soon as possible. However, it was really hard for my partner and I to raise enough funds to support his surgery. I am my family’s breadwinner, and I am still supporting my younger sister in her studies. The only source of income we can depend on for the surgery is my partner’s. However it is still not enough since salary in the Philippines is relatively low compared to other countries.
And so with a hopeful and humble heart, my family and I are knocking at you good hearts. Please help us raise funds to make Lucas’ open heart surgery a possibility that he may share his smile and laughter with the rest of the world for a much longer time. My family and I can’t thank you enough for helping us give our little angel a chance to live a healthier and longer life.
