I am calling on everyone to support Miss Elenani Dawa from Fiji in her battle with Cancer (Ewings Sarcoma) I have come to know her grandparents in my time in Fiji and it breaks my heart to see them go through the struggle of trying to fund treatment for their grand daughter.

Elenani first started experiencing issues in early July 2015 due to lower abdominal pain. At this time she was diagnosed with appendicitis. However, this was a misdiagnosis and no further investigation was taken by the hospital into the mass which appeared on the CT scan.

Elenani was not given a biopsy until she was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain and swelling in Early November 2016, she was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. Fiji is lacking in its caliber of medical care and as a result, a young girl who should be enjoying her life has been bed ridden in the hospital on and off for the past three months. The only treatment she has received in the hospital has been morphine injections to help her cope with the pain. I have been to visit Elenani and although she has strength and hope in her eyes, it is clear she is suffering a great deal and I had to hold my tears when I saw her skeletal frame and how much pain she is in.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for Elenani to get the treatment she requires here in Fiji. She needs to be flown to India to have her treatment, and although the Fijian Ministry of Health is going to pay for the treatment and removal of the tumour, the cost of flights for her and her mother, and her mothers living costs over the course of 2-4 months in India will not be covered.

In Fiji the average wage is $3/hour and cost of living is very high compared to earnings so it's extremely hard to save. Some may read this and think "what I can give won't make a difference" Please don't think this! This breaks my heart so much because hundreds of people think like this, and if those hundreds just gave a few dollars it would mean the world.

  • It's not much but hopefully it can help offset some costs. Sending prayers for the little Elenani & her family. Good Luck!

  • Hi Michelle, this is probably no where near enough but hopefully every little bit will count and help your host families' grand daughter. I went through a similar experience when I did a host stay in Nicaragua. You feel quite powerless and guilty for having so much money and privledge in your own country, when you see that people in poorer countries are struggling just to get the bare necessities. Good luck on your campaign! Angele
