A long challenging journey to be what we have strived so hard for – World Dodgeball Champions with a mission.

DODGE, DIP, DUCK, DIVE, THROW AND CATCH are what we do best and we are Team Malaysia, Malaysia’s National Dodgeball Team.

Dodgeball is a fascinating sport whereby the objective is to eliminate the opponent by throwing and hitting them with dodgeball balls in the shortest possible time whilst upholding the values of honesty, integrity and respect in the heat of high level competition and overflow of emotions.

Well, it may sound as a surprise but this lesser known sport is indeed a highly competitive sport played at the world level and … our very own Team Malaysia is the reigning World Champions in both the Men’s and Women’s categories.

The World Dodgeball Championship is the biggest dodgeball tournament held annually in different countries and our ultimate objective is to win this year’s world championship and defend our world titles. For the past two years, the Women’s team has secured the gold medal whereas the Men’s team made their debut as world champions last year. Malaysia is the third country after USA and Canada to bag both gold medals in the one World Championship. We are pushing our limits, targeting to be the first country to secure the world champion title for both categories for two consecutive years.

Last year’s World Dodgeball Championship was held in the wonderful city of Las Vegas, USA. In order to participate and be on the national team, a regimented and specially prepared program was used to select 24 amazing, dedicated and talented dodgeballers to represent the country. However, we were faced with the financial hardship of bearing the expenses to make the long journey to USA from Malaysia to compete in the Championship. It took quite a toll on the team as well as the Malaysia Association of Dodgeball (MAD) to raise the money needed for accommodation, flight tickets, American visa application and meals. Having scarcely any funding from both the private and government sectors, MAD through its organizing of tournaments, dodgeball workshops and coaching classes helped to raise funds and in addition to our team’s relentless efforts to secure sufficient funds, we managed to cover the basic necessities of flight tickets and accommodation only and we made our way to USA for the championship. All our effort was not in vain when we were crowned world champions at the 2018 World Dodgeball Championships.

This is why we, Team Malaysia are reaching out to ask for financial aid for the purchase of air tickets and accommodation to Cancún, Mexico where the 2019 World Dodgeball Championship will be held.

No doubt, winning the World Championship title back to back this year will be a dream come true and a milestone achievement for this developing sport in Malaysia. This will be a wonderful opportunity for us as ambassadors of the sport of dodgeball to assist in the further growth and develop the sport not only in our own country but worldwide and at the same time spread the values of honesty, integrity and respect that are so immersed as part of dodgeball.

The end game would be to see the inclusion of dodgeball as an Olympic sport for both able and disabled athletes. This will be a long haul ambition and task but as long as there is a Team Malaysia year after year and national dodgeball team in every country playing this awesome sport at the world level, this ambition can be achieved.

But for now, we who are the current Team Malaysia share the common goal of working as a team to showcase and share with everyone how the sport of dodgeball has taught us to be stronger and to have the respect for all ingrained in us. We know what it is like to work and fight so hard for what we have set out to achieve and it is our pledge to give back to society in any way possible as we continue to engage in this dodgeball journey of ours.
