My name is Faith Leong, and I’m currently waiting to matriculate into university to read a History degree.

For the past 2 years, I’ve been working and hoping hard in order to gain entrance into the University of Oxford. For a really long time, I doubted myself on this, and always tried to rationalise that I wasn’t good enough, that I couldn’t really hope to really go. I always assumed that the hardest part of entrance to Oxford would be the complicated admissions, or my inadequate grades.
I’ve been incredibly blessed to have received both an offer from the college of my choice - Queen’s College, and adequate grades. All that remains, now, is to secure the funds to go. My parents won’t be able to pay for my further education, and I’ve applied for virtually every scholarship out there - to no avail. If I’m being honest, the rejections that I’ve gotten from scholarship providers have been quite a downer as well - every time I’m asked about my university plans I ask myself - why did they reject me? Is there an outstanding moral flaw in myself that has caused all this? I’ve tried to think of possible ways in which I could have seemed arrogant or untrustworthy in my applications, and although I’m probably not the best judge of my own character, I wonder what exactly it is that turned them away.

So, as you can tell, I’m nervously and very tentatively starting this out to get some help for funding my education. I’m not sure if I can realistically get any significant help from this campaign, but all I know is this: I’m completely unable to do it on my own.
Going to Oxford is important to me, because it’s more than just a novel experience at a prestigious university. It’s the realisation of the efforts of all my mentors and teachers who placed their hopes on me and my longtime dreams of finally being able to study History at university level, at my university of choice.

Lately, I’ve tried to pay it forward by starting an admissions mentorship programme for students at my alma mater. There are so many amazing young minds out there who have so much potential but insufficient guidance and resources to realise it, and I hope that as I do my part to change that in what way can, you will, too. On this page, I’ve included some pictures of examples of previous participation in youth advocacy projects and conferences; for instance, I’ve been very active in the local Model United Nations circuit and have chaired a number of conferences recently.

You may wonder what’s in this for you, and honestly, I’ll have to admit that there isn’t anything material that you can and will receive from helping me out. But as I’ve previously mentioned, I believe very strongly in paying it forward, and I can guarantee that if I’m fortunate enough to be in that position, I will do all I can for other youths in my position; to help them with admissions, share about my experiences, mistakes, and successes, and teach them that dreams are worth pursuing. ❤️

Taking a gap year.

Update posted by Faith Leong at 01:07 pm

Dear All,Just an update on my current situation — as you can clearly see, I will be taking a gap year. There were many considerations in making this decision, and that includes both the current state of uncertainty engendered by the ongoing pandemic as well as an insufficient conviction with. . . . .

  • Congratulations on your acceptance to Oxford! Don't blame yourself for being unable to get a scholarship - it's not your character, but possibly because you chose history. In my past I failed a scholarship interview when I missed the hint to switch to civil engineering, because that particular scholarship provider was looking for me to gain a skill useful to them. As someone who is presently studying overseas, I can emphatise that it is not an easy decision to leave for another country. I actually took several years preparing and only made the final decision several months before. While I do encourage you to have some experience away from Singapore, everyone knows that UK is quite expensive. When I first went overseas, I calculated based on my savings whether I could study there for years without my parents' support - which is one reason why I went to a cheaper country. My parents insisted on continuing to give me pocket money of a few hundred each month, which I partly left in Singapore because I was actually spending less while overseas. Anyway, your financial situation would be very different if you went to UK. I don't know where you got the figure of $280,000 from, but don't forget to calculate the living expenses as well as income if you work during breaks. I hereby donate a token sum of support, which I may increase if: - you provide details for how the $280,000 would be spent - you prove your interest in history by sharing a list of relevant books which you have read, or relevant articles you have authored In the event that you do not go to Oxford, please use whatever funds I have sent to further your education elsewhere, or donate it to charity.
