The Awoma Aid Post is located in the most remote and mountainous regions at the edge of the famous Owen Stanley Range in Kokoda ,Northern Province, Papua New Guinea. The area is located at Latitude: 9°11'12.07"S Longitude: 148° 5'4.55"E and 3945ft. (see google earth images )
There is small Aid Post that serves sick children and patients .The Aid post has no lights and electricity .The Aid Post is in a dire need of electricity for lights and freezer cooler to preserve vaccines in the Aid Post. Due to the remote and isolated area without road network, medical supplies are rarely air freighted from the capital city Port Moresby via single engine light airplane and distributed to the Aid Post. Most vaccines are not preserved after usage due to no proper cooling faciilities. many rural patients die due to lack of medical supplies like vaccines which could be preserved for longer usage.
The need is realized when an Electrical Engineer did a site survey for a potential Mini Hydro Generator with output power of 5kw to be installed near the mountain stream next to the aid post. The Mini Hydro Generator will utilize the fast flowing streams to convert its potential energy into Kinetic Energy to drive the turbines to produce Electricity to power freezer to preserve vaccines. In addition the Mini Hydro Generator is cheap non-renewable source of energy and it is environmental friendly with low carbon emission.
