Good morning ladies and gentlemen. My name is Laura and my daughter is Kayle. She has been a T1D (Type One Diabetic) for over 7 years. Kayle was diagnosed at 23 months of age (11/27/07) when I noticed that all she wanted to do was drink water and lay around not being her spunky self, I took her in to the ER to get checked out and that's when they told me. I was devastated. We then were transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit where we spent 36 hours in the PICU and another 5 days in a regular room. She's only been in DKA one time; (Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening condition that develops when cells in the body are unable to get the sugar (glucose) they need for energy because there is not enough insulin), and that was at diagnosis, never again has she been there (knocks on wood). She did however have a seizure about 2 months after being diagnosed. That was the first of 4. The most recent one was last year April (2014). They are scary and never wish them upon any child. We just recently went on the T-Slim and she's been doing ok. Her numbers are high then low, it seems we can't find a happy medium. Her last A1c was 10.1. I try so hard and yet I feel like I am failing her. I have found great support from those here online that know what I am going through first hand and I'll say, it's a lot of what has gotten me through because it's not easy. I struggle and fail miserably and then there are days that go perfectly. There's never an in-between for more than a few days at a time and it doesn't help that I'm pretty sure she's coming into the crazy hormone stage, her attitude has changed. She gets so mad now that she has T1 that it becomes a battle. We are now trying to raise money to fund a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor; Glucose monitoring helps people with diabetes manage the disease and avoid its associated problems. A person can use the results of glucose monitoring to make decisions about food, physical activity, and medications. The most common way to check glucose levels involves pricking a fingertip with an automatic lancing device to obtain a blood sample and then using a glucose meter to measure the blood sample's glucose level. A CGM will cut down on the amount of finger pokes needed during the course of the day and night). Please help us try and get a CGM for Kayle and since her insurance will not cover it, we are trying to raise it. Please help my beautiful baby girl!
