TITLE: "Mga Bag-ong Nawong (sang Damgo kag Katingalahan)"

Writer/Director: Mark L. Garcia

SYNOPSIS: It is an exploration of how we use the masks as our new faces in these trying times. It shows a perspective of what life is like during the pandemic through poetry, metaphor, movements, and the use of painted masks.

ABOUT: The film is a work-in-progress film for NCCA-National Committee on Cinema's "Eksena Cinema Quarantine" (ECQ), an omnibus feature film that will feature 16 directors from across the Philippines.

CONCEPT: Since the start of lockdown, I was left alone in my room, thinking about the things that I should be doing without the pandemic. I was left with my imaginations, fantasies, and internal wanderings of the places, things, and people outside. My only lookout of the outside world is the internet and the things I hear in television, radio, and internet.

In isolation, I feared I could not find new inspirations for another story. With that has been going around in the country, and in my head, I became emotional, stiff, and mechanical in everything that I do. It’s like putting myself in a freezer that I can barely move, looking for warmth and light from all of these.

When I had the chance to finally go out, everyone has worn their “new faces”. We begin to mask or cover our faces, hands, and eventually our whole body to protect (or conceal) ourselves from the unseen enemy. Are we really protecting ourselves or are we just covering our fears? I see the masks as a symbol of these challenging times.

It is our new face in this “new normal” that they call and I want to explore living the life with it. This is the story I need to tell in these challenging times. “Mga Bag-o nga Mga Nawong (sang Damgo kag Katingalahan)” [The New Faces (of Dreams and Mysteries)] is an experimental film that will explore all of these thoughts and musings since the start of the lockdown.

It will be written in binalaybay (Hiligaynon poetry) spoken during the whole 6 to 8 minutes of the film. We will use Maestro Nunelucio Alvarado’s “Nawong” series, which features different paintings of abstract faces that will be worn in the film. It will represent the new “faces” of the current situation: how do we use them, how do we adapt while wearing it, how do we breathe, and how did it become a part of our lives.

It’s been almost five months, and we still soak into these things. When will it end? Will we contain the virus or will we contain ourselves permanently? Until then, we continue to use these masks, our new faces.
