Family, friends, and complete strangers, I've embarked on the tough journey of the unpaid internships. To stray away from the corporate monotony of jobs that I would hate to do, I instead accepted two unpaid jobs within my own field of interests.
The first being with an extremely innovative company called TerraCycle. Located in Trenton, NJ, they are founded on the idea of elminating waste by recycling traditionally non-recyclable or hard to recycle materials. Here I am given the opportunity, as part of the Community Engagement and Incubation Team, to expand ideas that could result in the higher collections and lead to a reduction in landfill waste and result in more donation money to non-profit organizations.
The second is with the soon to be 5 year-old small record label of Brooklyn, NY, The Royal Potato Family. Named after a bad joke that Bob Dylan once told the founder, they specialize in mostly Jazz music, but with some Rock, Americana, and Alternative as well. The main point for them is to support artists. Artisits who still have creative control of the music they make and stray away from the commercialism and mass produced sounds that have drowned out the essence of what music should be.
Given the geographic distances, you can tell I do quite a bit of travel. In fact on average, just driving to and from work results in almost 400 miles of travel a week and about $40 in tolls with no time to pick up a part time job to try to fund my travels.
After a month and a half of not receiving a paycheck, I have come to realize I will need help to continue to fund my work and make it through the summer not further in debt than I already am as a college student. Any amount would be appreciated and you should know that none of this money goes towards anything more than travel and the occasional dollar menu meal to get through the day.
Thank you for any support!
